Build Your Own Antler Trap to Collect Sheds

If you want to find deer sheds but don't have time to search, build your own antler trap.

There are many benefits to walking through the woods and searching for deer sheds. You can get a better lay of your land, you can see where the deer were most recently moving, and shed hunting is a great way to introduce hunting to a youngster.

But for many hunters there is just not always enough time to get in the woods and hunt sheds. But with just a few dollars and a little bit of time you can build an antler trap. That way, you can still get the antlers without having to search the whole forest for them.

What you need:

Directions:

This is a super easy build. All you need to do is find some small trees placed close together, this can be two trees or a patch of three or four if they are very close.

Then, wrap the chicken wire around the trees, connecting it to itself. You can use a pair of pliers to secure the wire making sure it is very tight, if it is too loose it can trap the deer if they are not ready to shed. After this is finished just pour some corn, or whatever attractant works best in your area, at the bottom of the wire trap on the ground. Read the rest of story here.

Rodents chew up sheds pretty quick. Squirrels chewed up a head I put in a tree to rot out and clean out.

The deer ticks have taken over in my neck of the woods. Disgusting parasites. If I get them early and they haven’t imbedded themselves I just pick em off and kill em. If they have been buried in my skin I go for antibiotics. No sense taking a chance.
20-30 years ago it was only wood ticks and dog ticks....no longer. No spotted fever that I have ever heard of in this locale. Just Lyme.

Yep- they’ve taken over where I am too- people getting lymes left and right- and really messing them up too as Docs don’t diagnose it soon enough because it’s relatively new- heard of folks being told it wasn’t lyme’s even when they had obvious bull’s-eye rash

Yep- years ago ticks weren’t even a thought in our minds- We kids lived In the woods- Today I can’t even go for a hike without having to brush myself of after every hike- shake out shirt, check legs for ticks etc- Uggg! I miss the old days

Baiting is one of the vectors for Chronic Wasting Disease. It’s a major cool idea, but will cause serious problems for the deer herd.
