RedState's own Leon Wolf did a great job exposing the Politico story about Ben Carson and West Point as a lie. Washington Post reporter Dave Weigel is also churning out great information on Twitter regarding the story.
I want to focus on what Donald Trump is doing with the story, however.
Yesterday, November 5, Donald Trump had this to say about Politico:
Look, Politico is so dishonest in so many different things. This Politico website or whatever the hell they call it, I mean, they write about me. We don't deal with them anymore because the level of dishonesty is incredible.
Today, November 6, Donald Trump is spreading the false Politico story about Ben Carson. Below is one of the several Trump Tweets citing the Politico piece.
What an incredible turnaround. It appears Trump is willing to do whatever it takes to destroy Carson, who is poised to disrupt his position as GOP frontrunner.
Yesterday, Trump seized on the silly CNN investigation of Carson's childhood. According to Trump, Carson's childhood might be a "total fabrication.?
Ironically, much of Trump's support is due to the perception that he tells the truth and shuns the mainstream media. It is now clear that he will abandon that notion when it suits him politically.
“Would you like to see the form.”
Why would anyone want to see a form Carson never filled out? Are you hoping that if Freepers look at the blank form that it will somehow rub off on Carson and give him more credibility even though he never filled one out? It won’t help him at all.
America has higher standards than this...and for someone to take pen and paper and do this to another human being is disgusting and is a mark on American values....
I don't know if Carson did or didn't do, that's not the point I'm making....but I will stand up for anyone, I don't care who they are, when this type of action is done to anyone....
YOU know I am a proud, solid Trump Support, always have been and always will be, but I sure would hope if something like this happened to my candidate, someone would see the injustice and say so...
America has much higher values than to do this to any human being, especially while running for the highest office in the land....
I’m now “Twiter” expert but in the message posted above it appears Trump is asking if the stories are true?

I will defend American Values for any legal person in this country...America has higher values than to let a person of this type with his pen and paper ‘tar and feather’ another legal human being in this Country...
That disgusting reporter or whatever he calls himself should be fired immediately and that is where we should all have our support right now is on the media and I mean all support...if this was your candidate and no one stood up to the plate for the rights legal Americans have then they are not the type of people we should have doing the jobs they do...
I don't know what happened with the Carson thing, and I don't care...the thing I care about is America has higher standards than this and we should make sure those standards are keep to a high level...
I like Trump, and I support Trump and if anyone has more love for America than Trump, I want to see them out front leading the cause to keep America Standards higher than what this media person tried in lowering them!

Very good. I heard yesterday’s show. It was a bit strange to hear Rush channel Carson when he was 17 years old which such accuracy. He never mentioned that Carson wrote about that much later as an adult.

Carson’s campaign says that Carson was a bit loose with his terminology, as in “I was offered a slot at West Point” when he should have said “I was invited to apply”.
No he is not an amnesty pimp. He is for a guest worker program that would put them in the migrant farm worker category but they get no benefits and THEY AREN’T CITIZENS! He is for putting the wall up as it is in Yuma County Arizona or haven’t you heard him say that!?! Perhaps you weren’t paying attention.

Yes. The point is that is was described as if he had the position at the academy. He didn’t. Someone may have told him to apply, but it is now apparent that he was not offered a scholarship.

Yes, I know, the MSM is vile, however they have done multiple trips on Trump right along. And they seem to get away with it for the most part. Trump gets attacked by the MSN, by the Dems, and by the RINO’s too. Ticks me off big time, and I haven’t heard Carson come to Trump’s defense to my knowledge. Huckabee has, Cruz has, the rest, meh. And every debate so far has been a MSN moderator attack dog feast on Trump’s hide, primarily on him more so than any other, and we all know it.
Carson is naive if he thought they wouldn’t get around to him one day, and that day has arrived. It appears that Carson has some truth problems, and someone has to find out what is true or false. This is the job of the press; they just don’t have to act like a pack of hyenas to accomplish this end.
But they are a pack of hyenas for Red, white, and blue blood!
I know they have, and I have written emails to them and told them what I think of their reporting habits...
And I attack back when they do this to Trump and he has taken more incoming than anyone for a long, long time...
But we have got to get America on higher ground that this type of reporting!!!
2016 will probably turn out to be a consequential election in the historical sense.
There is a lot at stake and it will get very dirty. They haven’t even started yet. Carson has challenged them directly. He will now get a proper investigation at their hands.
I wish it didn’t work this way, but it does. If he can withstand this, he just might win, but if his past narrative turns out to be fanciful, he goes down in flames.
Right now the latter seems more likely to me.
Simple, make sure there is no one near wearing a blue dress.
I’m not a Trump supporter, but his jumping on Carson is a serious mistake if he wants Carson’s base for the nod, and he is going to need Carson’s votes for the nomination. He should shut up like the other candidates and let the good doctor implode on his own.
And its not so much the person, Trump has taken more incoming than anyone for a long, long time, even before he announced...
The thing I don't like is the ‘witch hunts’ the ‘lying to make a story’ at the cost of someone’s reputation...it wouldn't matter if it was Bush, Rubio, or anyone, the thing is the style of reporting and the dirty way they do it...
This is NOT what America is about, this has NEVER been what America is about, why should we sit back and let it happen?
She deserves better than this and so do Her people...
