RedState's own Leon Wolf did a great job exposing the Politico story about Ben Carson and West Point as a lie. Washington Post reporter Dave Weigel is also churning out great information on Twitter regarding the story.
I want to focus on what Donald Trump is doing with the story, however.
Yesterday, November 5, Donald Trump had this to say about Politico:
Look, Politico is so dishonest in so many different things. This Politico website or whatever the hell they call it, I mean, they write about me. We don't deal with them anymore because the level of dishonesty is incredible.
Today, November 6, Donald Trump is spreading the false Politico story about Ben Carson. Below is one of the several Trump Tweets citing the Politico piece.
What an incredible turnaround. It appears Trump is willing to do whatever it takes to destroy Carson, who is poised to disrupt his position as GOP frontrunner.
Yesterday, Trump seized on the silly CNN investigation of Carson's childhood. According to Trump, Carson's childhood might be a "total fabrication.?
Ironically, much of Trump's support is due to the perception that he tells the truth and shuns the mainstream media. It is now clear that he will abandon that notion when it suits him politically.
Yes, indeed, he did say that yesterday.
You have got to have your head in the sand to not understand why an ordinary person would not want to come forward into the spotlight. Ivana Trump is a well-known figure here in NYC. She knows how to deal with the media; plus, she has her wealth to insulate her. Ben’s relative may not have anything like that. So, to me, it is very far from weird.
I’m going to support Trump and/or Cruz and try to ignore all this character assassination.
I see you’re a big fan of the Big Lie, and of accusing your opposition of doing what you do to create a false reality, and I know I shouldn’t wrestle a pig because I’ll get dirty (while the pig enjoys it) but I feel some push back is in order.
I don’t like Trump. He’s a shape-shifter; he changes positions and political parties as often as he changes his socks.

I will admit to having a bit of schadenfreude seeing Trump hoisted with his own petard but it mostly is overwhelmed by the disgust I hold for his liberal views and his unprincipled history of supporting those I oppose - LIBERALS!

What I did that was so infuriating to Walker’s opposition was repeatedly linking to articles and information that disputed the lies being said about Scott Walker.

Trump should have taken the high road. This is going to cost him. His days at the top of the polls may soon be over.
It doesn’t sound that way to me. It sounds a lot more like what happened to me. A bunch of military muckety-mucks told that if I applied, I would receive an appointment. Oh, by the way, that appointment would come with all tuition, room and board, books, and a stipend, what is colloquially known as a full tide. My older son actually received an offer like this to our state flagship university. We often referred to it as a “full scholarship.”
He received scholarship other offers unsolicited from schools to which he had no intentionn of applying. We used to joke that we were waiting for the unsolicited offer that included $80k per year, 160 acres, and five virgins.

“Encouraged to apply” Perfect. Mr Carson’s phrasing makes me think he had a spot at WP that was his to accept or decline. That was clearly not the case. If I had to wager a dollar one way or another, my bet would be that his intent was to mislead.
