I'm not sure why anyone would take offense at something that has been formally enshrined in Christianity since the Council of Nicaea. From the Nicene Creed:

Et unam, sanctam, catholicam et apostolicam Ecclesiam.
(And in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church.)

Whenever this pope’s words are interpreted as if he’s going against Catholic doctrine, he’s criticized.

And, now, when his words are interpreted to be in line with Catholic doctrine, he’s criticized.
