Did you know that there are a lot of natural nuclear shelters in the US that are absolutely free.
For example, just 1200 Feet below Detroit there is a salt mine that can easily shelter over 5 million people. This is also the case in Houston, Cleveland and other cities.
You might find it hard to believe, but Kansas City has a nuclear shelter which houses 10 percent of citys commercial real estate.
In Kansas City they have Subtropolis as it is called is an ex limestone mine with an excavated size of 140 football fields, which was turned into an underground industrial park, but I'm pretty sure it will make a great nuclear bunker.
Find the Closest Natural Bunker to Your Home
This is an interesting topic but of course only if you want to live in a post nuclear-war era.

I was thinking of nuclear war just this morning (Macabre, eh?). What a horrid way to die. Surviving after one would be even less of a picnic.
You are only safe if you are already in there. even a near miss would irradiate the hell out of the area for how many thousands of years.

Unless you account for Stargate Command.
Being trapped underground with vast amounts of people, in competition for food, water, and air is a terrifying thought to me. The social dyamics alone are too horrible to imagine.

I think I'll take my chances on the surface.
It does not, to the best of my knowledge....Of course if you have "live" ammo....it could get sick and die...:-)
Not really....
Anyone who lived through the 50s-60s....it's pretty much a habit..
"How would you know if Detroit was nuked?"
Lol! Excellent.
Here's Detroit before the attack.
Yep, that’s Detroit.
220 feet below ground..that's 22 stories!.........limestone walls are painted brilliant white, bright lights illuminate the passages ........50 degree water from 150-acre underground lake....Fifteen colossal generators....125 large vaults, (One vault is the size of a shopping center) plus another 25 smaller units and hundreds of acres still to be developed...trouble is..armed guards, steel gates, layers of security, biometrics but it's protected from the elements, civil unrest, terrorist-type things>
It would be a lot flatter and the the glass would have softer edges.
Actually the mine search site linked to the article identifies an underground salt mine in Hockley.

I didn't click on the link as I wouldn't go where a crowd is in an emergency; no reason to read about where you can join the crowd and die.
I have been up north for 20 days, north being up through Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, West Virginia, Ohio, Penn., New York, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, and back to 20 miles north of Dallas.
As I visited relatives, I also visited their “basements” if they had one. We don't do basements in Texas as they would fill with water. Well, maybe in west Texas, you can find some.
Anyway, what great basements there are in our northern states. Wow, you have the space of your whole house under your house with nothing in it unless you finish it out with whatever you want. The ones I saw were “finished” or partially finished.
If you have a basement, there is your fall out shelter in case of a nuclear bomb that doesn't kill you right then. You would have to do work to make it secure from radiation fallout/material, and provide a “good air” system, etc., but that is better than going where big crowds are underground which, to me, is a big loser.
Why prepare for an emergency anyway - surely we won't have a big emergency. Well, our government many years ago knew it could happen and you and I paid for emergency shelters for certain elected officials, including the President and his family. They are taken care of with their own emergency shelter we built for them. If it was and is important to save them, why not save yourself? You are as important as they are, right?
If you have a wonderful basement and you don't use it for emergency prep storage, you are just nuts. That is my “professional” opinion - you are just nuts.
When I went to the site, I received antivirus warnings of trojans.
How about those of us living around New Orleans? We would need a snorkel to find a bunker.
