A pastor appearing on CNN Monday morning gave a novel excuse for why people should stop saying the words “illegal immigrant”: because Jesus was an illegal immigrant.

“Well, not only was Jesus a rebel, but Jesus was an undocumented immigrant himself when he fled to Egypt seeking persecution [sic] in his day,” said Rev. Ryan Ellers in a debate with CNN conservative contributor S.E. Cupp. “So the question becomes [would] we call Jesus himself illegal if he were, you know, in our modern times?”

When He was born, Mary and Joseph were in Bethlehem responding to a requirement from Augustus Caesar that all males should return to their hometown for a census. The purpose of the census was to allow taxation of the individuals, so the Romans had to know how many inhabitants there were in the region. Mary and Joseph were out of their homes when Jesus was born. Thus the recent meme that Jesus was born homeless.

When this meme is used it should be pointed out rather loudly that Jesus was born homeless because the burden of government taxation had forced Joseph and Mary out of their house and home!

Even if Jesus and parents did not go through legal channels, Jesus was a true refugee and thus the flight to Egypt was a moral act.

Seems to me Jesus was just returning to his home country having left Israel to avoid political persecution (better known as infant killing). Besides, not aware there was passports, formal border checkpoints, etc during that period of time. For those who have no interest in Jesus, they are always eager to demonstrate how he is in their camp when it fits their agenda. Why would you involve him if you don’t even believe he existed?
