Priorities: FDA cracks down on vegan mayonnaise labeling
Hot Air ^ | August 28, 2015 | Mary Katharine Ham

As always, the Food and Drug Administration has its eye on the ball and its arms around freedom…in a big, stifling bear hug. The Founders no doubt intended that the federal government would have a passel of people in charge of telling successful condiment producers what they can put on their labels. For freedom.

In this case, the federal government has decided a vegan company cannot put the name “Just Mayo” on its clearly labeled vegan mayonnaise product because the company doesn’t include egg whites in the mixture and does include some healthy stuff, like beta carotene. One would think most could discern from a vegan “Just Mayo” product that advertises itself as a vegan mayo product that it probably doesn’t have eggs—an animal product—in said vegan product. But why trust the American consumer when you can crack down on a small, upstart business selling a product people like to the people who like it? And, if we are to concede that it is indeed horribly misleading to call this product mayo, does it have to be a function of the federal government to correct this?

Reason reports:

FDA was a prisoner of its own regs here. If the regs say "eggs" and they are not there in what is labeled as "mayo," then there is misbranding.

Not saying I agree, but the regs were there way before this vegan product came to market.

So the FDA has nothing better to do?

Can’t study the link between mass shooting a shink meds?

Nope, it has gotta be the Vegan mayo that requires their full attention and funding....

Maybe next they will go after the salt content in soda crackers....

Why not just call the product “Not Mayo”?

My wife accidently picked up some FAT FREE half and half.

I complained to the manufacturer and they sent me a refund plus some extra for ruining my morning coffee.

I went to store and saw that they had about a three x four ft section of half and half ... Only two cartons of REAL half and half were visible.

Manager gave me a carton of REAL half and half.

You have to stick up for your REAL foods.

"Why not just call the product “Not Mayo”?"

Or better:

I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!

Mayonnaise is a defined thing and has been for a couple of centuries. It is an emulsion of egg, oil, and acid.

Just like Scotch is Scotch and not Everclear with food coloring, Mayonnaise is a thing, and many recipes depend on the emulsification of those ingredients to be successful.

Not sure if the government needs to mess with it, but the manufacturer is lying when they say they are selling mayonnaise is they don’t have those three things in it.

My wife accidently picked up some FAT FREE half and half.

A few months ago, I picked up a container of no-fat cottage cheese. That stuff was awful -- no taste and a strange texture. Most of it ended up going down the garbage disposal.

I think custard would have to contain eggs-not starch.
Pudding doesn’t have to contain eggs.

Probably because Kraft, or somebody. has a vegan mayo product and doesn’t want the competition.
