This has gone on long enough. All that anyone can talk about right now is how Republican voters are itching for someone to “stand and fight,” “speak his mind,” and “tell it like it is.” All right then, here goes.
Donald Trump is not a conservative, and it’s beyond time every Republican knows it. This MSNBC caricature of the GOP incarnate is getting heaps of praise from frustrated conservative base voters and unfortunately too much airtime from conservative political pundits because he evidently “tells it like it is.”
Except that he doesn’t.

I have heard this argument, and I could accept it if it wasn’t for so many of the Trump Thumpers out here claiming he’s like some super-ultimate Tea Party candidate and that his coronation to the nomination is unstoppable.
I still feel he is doing more to damage true conservatism than help. If his presence forces people like Cruz and Walker out and we get stuck with this fraud, I’m staying home. I will take no part in this charade.
Trump may not be conservative enough for us here in FR.
But he speaks his mind boldly and plainly, he is a fighter.
Romney a fighter? No.
McCain a fighter? All he ever fought were conservatives.

Tariffs equal higher costs to consumers.
Tariffs (just like the minimum wage ) will hurt the job market.

Politicians love tariffs (bribes, extortion) until the Crash comes.
It was the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 (which brought the U.S. tariff to its highest in history ) that prolonged the Great Depression.
Thats what is wrong with tariffs.
My husband and I watched many seasons of The Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice. Almost without fail, we predicted who Donald would fire even when the candidates sat in the boardroom and argued their cases. He always had the right reasons — to our way of seeing things — for telling someone that it was time to go. And there were times when he would admit, “I hate to do it, but...”
On top of that, Donald exposed Geraldo for the imbecile he is by not editing out the many moments where he came off as the most obnoxious jerk on the planet.
If he could take that kind of decision making to DC it would be amazing.
Neither Cruz nor Walker seem to be taking any long term damage. And Trump *is* taking some serious hits which would have otherwise gone to them. This will leave them both stronger for the real race.

How do you compete with almost free labour then? Free trade doesn’t work.
I would like to know how much of our tax dollars are going to produce and pay for those ads. Some lobby is making a ton of money putting together ads that are stupid.

Donald Trump has captured the imagination of many disaffected Americans with his rhetoric and no nonsense approach to the many problems facing America today. I tend to agree with a lot of what he is ‘saying’; but I think you have to look at his history as well. I believe he is more of a disaffected Democrat than any kind of conservative. Let’s start looking at his history, even recently. I live near Atlantic City where he has had a very large presence through his gambling and ‘entertainment’ establishments. In both 2013 and 2014 his Trump Taj Mahal casino hosted the annual Porn Convention that passed out free condoms for anyone wishing to try out with one of the 300 porn stars at the convention. Now the Donald will no doubt deny he has anything to do with scheduled events there; but it is him name associated with it via Trump Entertainment Resorts, Inc. In addition, one of his principal sources of income over the years has been gambling. Maybe we have fallen too far in this nation to realize that gambling, including legalized gambling, is something that destroys lives and families. I have seen people in my neigborhood loose their homes due to gambling debts they could not repay along with children doing without clothing or food because their parents have a gambling addiction. The only answer Donald and his fellow casino owners have is to put up billboards along the AC Expressway listing a number you can call to get help if you have a gambling addiction. And if you want to dig a bit deeper, the guy has been married a total of four times, but hey, who is counting since he says he is a big proponent of traditional marriage. I guess that does not include the number of traditional marriages. Christ was very clear about this in his teachings on divorce except in the case of marital infidelity. So all you evangelical Christians out there who are warming to “The Donald” just take a look at not only his words but his deeds as well.
You mean this isn’t the real race? I think one of the biggest problems with our election process is that it’s always run like a horse race. Who is gaining, who is coming from behind, who is riding the rails and who is praying for another horse to go lame.
I'm just an observer at this point, but a few of the most important differences and distinctions for me have become clear. Most notable is that for some, with age and experience comes a wisdom worth following.
Trump has fought in the arena all his adult life at a level the other candidates have mostly watched from the sidelines, few of those have trained for and it's obvious.
Moreover, I believe the world has thrown every challenge and temptation at Trump that it has. He's fallen a few times, but he never quit and look at him now. He seems to be immune to the disease.
Again, the others are outsiders looking in for most of those battles still waiting for their turn...whether they know it or not. The skeletons of their failures are carefully buried. Trump's are known by the world, literally.
He is a glaring contrast for mostly all the right reasons, and in spite of his blustery persona. Fun to watch!
In the meantime, it's like one of my favorite Little Feat songs says,
"Well they say that time loves a hero
But only time will tell
If he's real he's a legend from heaven
If he ain't he was sent here from hell."
These answers would get Donald through the debate this week just fine.
Free trade does work.
It’s like what Churchill said about democracy - “It being the worst from of government except for all the others that have been tried.”
And by the way, if you like black markets you will really love tariffs. The thing is, despite all the connivances of government (tariffs, cronyism, etc. ) someone will always find a way to do it cheaper and better.
LS, I understand how people feel about him, and I cannot blame them or belittle them. I understand it. it is just that I don’t trust him or believe anything he says. I haven’t watched television now going on 15-20 years, so I missed all that “You’re fired” stuff.
The fact that something inside me doesn’t like or trust him doesn’t mean I don’t like hearing the things coming out of his mouth, because I am glad someone is saying them. So, that does set him apart from people like the GOPe candidates and would make me vote for him over any of them.
But to me, that is damning with faint praise.
The only thing I can see he has going for him (for me, at least) is that he has capitalistic tendencies and knows the ins-and-outs of business, how to run one, how to make money running one, and how to lose money running one.
That does count, but then, Ross Perot had that going for him too, and he had someone like Admiral Stockdale vouching for him.
My inner radar, from the first time I ever saw or heard Donald Trump, has not changed even a little bit. My inner voice does not like or trust him. Doesn’t mean I won’t vote for him, but it discourages me that in these times (times that I feel will become desperate at some point in the not-so-far future) this is our Churchill, as another poster said. This is the best we will get.
It is extremely discouraging to me. I have come to the hard end that our political system is broken, because we don’t follow the guidelines that are supposed to regulate our political system, and the representation it has given us has long ceased to be representative. Politically speaking, this is extremely distressing and discouraging to me.
I feel politically adrift. I cannot, in good conscience, support the GOP because it is embracing leftist concepts that are anathema to me, albeit in a slightly more diluted form. I have stopped believing in compromise, because I believe that compromising with evil is supporting evil. All compromising amounts to now is a series of delaying actions in a losing campaign as we back closer, and closer to the precipice.
So, yes. I might vote for him. But this is the hard end I have come to, after a life of believing that we can be great and live up to the dreams of our founders. I believe our country is broken, politically.
And I don’t think I can explain to anyone how that makes me feel.
One more thing.
America has moved past the Industrial Age.
The Third World is entering it. It supplies the labor and products.
America has entered the service economy and Technological/Biometric Age. Tariffs won’t affect those businesses to the degree it did when we were making stuff.
The American worker needs to get smarter or take the low wages of that service economy.
Sure the Donald can Trump tariffs on goods coming from around the world. What do you think those countries are going to do with our products then? Our goods don’t sell in China because of their tariffs. China is proof that endless tariffs are not a viable economic system.
Tariff wars have never worked.
The current trade relationship with China is working because the American consumer likes to pay less for his things. The American consumer likes Walmart.
The good news is that people CAN and DO CHANGE.
Give Donald Trump CREDIT for TELLING THE NEEDED TRUTH.
I read the linked article, and the author's statement in his article "...Thank you, Mr. Trump, for raising the issue of border security, as if it weren’t already an integral part of every single platform the other GOP candidates..." turned me off so completely I could barely do more than skim the rest of the article.
What a load of horse-hooey.
Got to remember that Americans are watching their pennies.
I am done with the GOPE myself.
Trump, Cruz, Walker, are examples of both leadership and profiles in courage.
