Think of it as the Empire strikes back. Two days after Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas took to the floor of the Senate and called Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a liar, Republican senators, apparently on the behest of the Republican leader, refused to second a motion to back a Cruz amendment to the highway bill to make the lifting of sanctions against Iran contingent on that country recognizing Israels right to exist and freeing four American hostages. As the Washington Examiner reported on Sunday, the lesson was struck home by Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah when he delivered a soliloquy about decorum in the Senate, obviously directed against Cruz.

That is the part of this I find most curious. There was not even one other Senator who would stand against McConnell? This needs further explanation by those who might have been expected to stand up like Lee, Paul, or Cotton.

@StewSays @McConnellPress you should be known as Reid II
I hope Midge is getting hit much harder than that, on his social media sites. That was a fluff-tweet.
I believe it required more than one second to get the recorded vote,
LOL!
Excellent observation.

I think this incident has clearly illustrated that, aside from Ted Cruz, there are no conservatives in the senate.
Ted Cruz is a unique and rare person.
God Bless Ted Cruz.
To Hell with the rest.

Yes, Wikipedia says it requires a vote of one-fifth of those present. Interesting, the Senate itself seems to have taken down the page containing the relevant rules, per a recent search.
Don’t back down Ted...and figure out how to let the American public know what you’re up to! Donald Trump is demonstrating the epic levels of disgust the people have for all forms of our governing establishment, build on that!
A roll call vote is usually optional, but any Senator can ask for a roll call vote on any subject. If he gets 2/5th of the senate to agree to a roll call vote, there will be a roll call vote.
There needs to be be NO second to an appeal against the ruling of the chair. Cruz appealed the ruling, he either withdraws his appeal, or the senate votes on it. He didn't withdraw it. The senate held a voice vote, and upheld the ruling of the chair, that the amendment was out of order.
Congressional Record, 114th Congress, Page 5709
The PRESIDING OFFICER. The question before the Senate is the appeal of the junior Senator from Texas, Mr. Cruz, in relation to the offering of his amendment No. 2301, which has been ruled out of order. No debate is in order pursuant to rule XXII.
The question is, Shall the decision of the Chair stand as the judgment of the Senate?
Mr. CRUZ. I ask for the yeas and nays.
The PRESIDING OFFICER. Is there a sufficient second? [for yeas and nays]
There is not a sufficient second. [for yeas and nays]
The Senate sustains the decision of the Chair. ...
A similar vote took place a few minutes later, relating to an amendment offered by Lee. The dialog is slighlty more explaitory, but the process was exactly the same. A voice vote was conducted on the decision of the chair, that the amendment was not in order.
Mr. LEE. Mr. President, I have an amendment at the desk, amendment No. 2282, withdrawing Federal funding for Planned Parenthood, and I ask for its immediate consideration.Mrs. BOXER. I object.
The PRESIDING OFFICER. The amendment is not in order.
APPEAL OF THE RULING OF THE CHAIR
Mr. LEE. Mr. President, I appeal the ruling of the Chair and ask for the yeas and nays.
The PRESIDING OFFICER. Is there a sufficient second? [for yeas and nays]
There is not a sufficient second.
The question is on the appeal. [the Senate votes on the question]
The question is, Shall the decision of the Chair stand as the judgment of the Senate?
The Senate sustains the decision of the Chair.
