The entire debate is a moot point anyway. The divide isn't south vs. north anymore, it's conservative vs. liberal, and to a much lesser extent, rural vs. urban.
State of Michigan would survive very nicely. They might have to smuggle in some onions from Georgia (Valdavias).
Of course they have many folks from the South living there now, so raising an army might be problematical. Also, many "snowbirds" have replaced the "carpetbaggers."

CA’s San Joaquin valley supplies 60% of fresh produce to this country. FL, and TX could easily pick up the slack.
The answer to your first question is they get most of their food from somewhere south and west of them. A blockade would starve them quickly.

What I was saying, slightly tongue in cheek was shut off the transportation systems (Trucking and Rail) to the NE, and I believe they’d be in such disarray in 6 months they wouldn’t be able to fight.
People would be amazed how easy it would be to accomplish.
