J. Richard Cohen is president of the Southern Poverty Law Center
Exactly whose heritage does it celebrate?
Following the church shooting this week, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley offered powerful words of healing and said the people of South Carolina need us to come together and be strong.
But at the same time the states citizens are being urged to come together, the state continues to display a divisive symbol the Confederate flag outside the state Capitol.
Reacting to calls to remove it, Sen. Lindsey Graham said the flag is part of who we are.
His answer makes me wonder just who Graham means by we. Does he mean the white people of South Carolina? Does he mean the neo-Confederates of South Carolina? Surely he doesnt mean the African Americans in his state whose ancestors were enslaved, tortured and murdered under the regime represented by that flag. Surely he doesnt mean older African Americans who still recall the terrorism of Klansmen who adopted the flag as their standard during Jim Crow. Surely not.

Yup, I never turn my back on a Southerner :-)
J Richard Cohen needs to STFU. Nobody in the South gives a good you know what about this guys’ opinion. We do what we want. You don’t like it come and do something about it. I’ll be flying the stars and bars on my deck July4th right next to the Gadsen. ESAD for all I care.
Its time for all southerners to just get up in the face of these POS losers up North tellin us what to do.
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers
There’s a southern accent, where I come from
The young’uns call it country
The yankees call it dumb
I got my own way of talkin’
But everything is done, with a southern accent
Where I come from
Now that drunk tank in Atlanta’s
Just a motel room to me
Think I might go work Orlando
If them orange groves don’t freeze
I got my own way of workin’
But everything is run, with a southern accent
Where I come from
For just a minute there I was dreaming
For just a minute it was all so real
For just a minute she was standing there, with me
There’s a dream I keep having
Where my mama comes to me
And kneels down over by the window
And says a prayer for me
I got my own way of prayin’
But everyone’s begun
With a sou thern accent
Where I come from
I got my own way of livin’
But everything gets done
With a southern accent
Where I come from
I am not a big fan of the battle flag. In fact, I have lobbied JimRob to use the correct Georgia flag on this site. The flag he uses, which has the battle flag as an element, has not been been the official state flag since 2003, a dozen years ago.
That said, the SPLC is a hate group with questionable methodologies that hugely inflate the number of “hate groups” they associate with the Right (unjustifiably so), while ignoring many Leftist groups that should rightly be in a list such as the one they present. Here is a starting point for reading up on that subject:
The SPLC and Slant

There is no way I would use anything the SPLC recommends as a basis for policy. I might come to similar conclusion as they do on my own, based on other sources (likely extremely rarely), but I wouldn’t take their word that the sky is blue.
First of all, that flag is a battle flag. It was flown on battlefields. Brave men died under that flag, and I don't believe for a second that every one of them was a bigot.
Secondly, the Confederacy only existed for about four short years. The institution of slavery had been around for a long time before that, including in America, which is NOT "the regime represented by that flag." So if the Battle Flag is racist on its face, why isn't Old Glory?
The truth is, neither of those symbols is racist in and of itself. Either can be interpreted as racist, but that lies in the eyes of the beholder, not in the intent of the symbol itself.
“You’ll get as many people killed confiscating this flag as you would confiscating guns.”
That’s a fact.
“I grew up in Texas, which many dont know supported the Union during the CW.”
Say WHAT??? Texas seceded and was one of the Confederate States of America.
Hear! Hear!
I think Texas and Florida are the only two states who had a plebiscite on whether to secede or not. Both voted for secession.
Dear Time,
The Confederate Flag didn’t do anything.
It’s innocent.
Why is it that every time some evil person commits a heinous crime, other evil people feel that it is their time to start attacking inanimate objects and other innocent people?
Dylan Storm Roof decided to take the actions he took as an individual, and he alone bears the weight of its consequence.
A human being did this. Not a gun, not a flag, not a tv show, not a radio show.
No one and nothing else bears any responsibility whatsoever, so go settle your beef with him, and leave the rest of us the Hell alone.
He recognized the liberal slant.
One quarter of my family is from the South. We are very proud of all our veteran ancestors.
Don’t mess. Seriously, don’t mess.
So does he want it off historical places, to say that we shouldn’t admit that certain forts were held by the Confederacy during the Civil War?
Has Time ever apologized for supporting Hitler and Stalin back in the 1930s? I don’t think so.
Time also hated President Reagan for taking down the Soviets.
Time is the last, dying breathe for the leftover hippy scum propagandists.
Bye-bye, Nazi/commie traitors...
I suggest you find a safe harbor before we hang you dirtbags.
In Mississippi we chose to change the Governor and keep the flag.
I founded and fund the Urban Poverty Law Center because of the disgust I hold for SPLC and Herr Cohen.
Just trying to do my part.
Racism is a rediculous argument on the matter, national division and a war of Americans killing Americans is a much more reasoned and informed argument. Even to this day, the highest American body count in a war was in our own Civil War. I just don’t think current government buildings should carry the symbol of division. Historial Buildings should have what was accurate to the times.
