Obscured by Jon Stewarts well-publicized mockery of Texans reaction to Jade Helm 15the US Armys two-month-long exercise across nine states scheduled to begin in Julyis the fact that the criticisms may not all be deranged droolings.
The Daily Shows Stewart made headlines earlier in May when he ridiculed Texas Governor Greg Abbotts decision ordering the State Guard to monitor Jade Helm. The comedian-cum-newsman called Jade Helm critics Lone Star lunatics. But are they? Or is there more to the story? As always, WhoWhatWhy has remained agnostic while asking questions. Now, we provide a few initial answers. More will undoubtedly come.

Jade Helm will be conducted in the states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, Mississippi, Florida and Louisiana. One other state, Colorado, has dropped off the list, as have at least two counties in Texas, in response to the controversy.
Criticisms of the exercise range from panicked, extreme scenarios, such as imminent martial law and mass arrests, to more nuanced concernsfor example, that military exercises on this scale could desensitize civilian populations to martial law tactics and governance.

Isn’t Jade Helm a porn actress?
This will not turn out well.
Does using the IRS for political ends as the DNC
and McCAin have done violate Law?
Does arming al Qaeda consist of Treason?
Is the sky blue?
In answer to the title -
would it matter at all if it did?
I find it amusing, in a sick humor kind of way,
that the left just doesn’t seem to understand why anyone would have a problem
with a military “exercise” that designates their political enemies’ cities and locales as “hostile”.
Seriously, lefties... are you so self-focused that it’s impossible for you to reverse the situation and see if you might “have a problem” with it?
I note back early in Clinton’s first term and the tenure of that doddering lesbian Janet Reno and the ‘situation’ much was made about potential ‘military cooperation/participation/action’ in the response to the besieged Branch Davidian Compound.
Thank God that the military’s presence was “only in an advisory capacity” and that the tank that burst through the compound walls inserting a “smoke grenade gone rogue” was just peaceful advising, cooperation and ‘training’....I’m so relieved.
I won’t even get into the FBI, Lon Horiuchi, et al....
No. Training exercises have been going on by the U. S. Military on Private and public land on a routine basis for over 100 years.
Ridicule is welcome from all corners, especially from conservatives.
The real question, given the warrior class in the chain of command has been replaced by politicians in uniforms, can you trust the Military anymore?
Also, keep in mind that Janet Reno was “ill” aka drunk. The person actually running the “Justice” Dept. was Eric Holder. (Yes, I know he’s not the AG now; his wife’s BFF and college roommate is...)
Yep. Who helped found a sorority chapter with her. If the Republicans had tried such an inbred stunt, the Dems would have shouted the dome off the Capitol and the media would have put it on the front page above the fold.

You Freepers are just PARANOID! It’s safe....our government told us so.
You would not believe that our Marxist President, Congress and Senate would want to put us all in slavery would you?
On second thought...thinking about how we are all tax slaves, they just might do so!
I admire your trust in the Federal government.
I will be aware of my situation and trust no one.
"The list of concerns over Jade Helm does not end with the perception that the military is treading perilously close to traditionally prohibited activities. Experts on Posse Comitatus note that even during more turbulent times, such as after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, when riots broke out in many major American cities including Chicago, Detroit, and Washington DC, it was not the military that responded but the National Guard, fulfilling its historic role of restoring law and order amid chaos."
I was in the army then. We were training only to protect Federal installations.
While that is true, given the nature of the exercise, the scope of the exercise, and the current political climate, I would be concerned that this is not so much a matter of military necessity, but more a provocation of the conservative citizenry.
Especially in light of the statements made by the one in the White House about needing a private security force, etc.
We have a couple of cities where rioting goes relatively unabated (and likely will have more cities in the same boat by the end of summer), yet the US military is deployed in such a fashion as to be elsewhere, intimidating a population by 'infiltrating' it, one which has not been a problem except to generally express its dissatisfaction with administration policies.
Why there, why now, if not to rattle sabers?
It is disgusting that the military allows itself to become embroiled in political activism (I'd add that this ‘activism’ always seems to be under Democratic Presidents).
We have so much of which to be proud in this country's rich history of sacrifice, fairness and caring. We also have so much to be ashamed of . Waco is one of them.
Some might say “400 years of slavery” or “Chinese coolies enslaved to our railroads” or “[ooga booga] white privilege” are far more egregious. Well, we've all amassed enough guilt to choke a pyrrhic altar several times over. We got a Hope and Change [Muslim, IMO] President because of it.
Even worse, our children have been vested with the revenge of a thousand lifetimes for it. Yet, actions like this are to respond to emergencies and terrorist strife. The kind of strife even our President or his cabinet will refuse to attach the words "Islam" or "Muslim" to anything connected with "terrorism".
Not no, but HELL no.
let’s say you WANTED to do something devious...
The people would notice a few hundred thousand military being placed all over the country.
So...
You would have to invent some innocuous sounding exercise as an excuse to be positioning everything all over the country
Because the military needs to ‘prepare’ for country wide unrest an martial law... for some reason, right?
You don't need ridicule, centurion. You need and deserve pity, especially from conservatives.
I’ve seen a lot of stuff on the internet about this exercise.
No doubt a lot of what is being reported is based more on speculative fear than on facts.
However, there is also little doubt that SOMETHING big is up. You simply cannot fake all of the military equipment and FEMA infrastructure that is being shown on the internet for everyone to see.
This is no damn training exercise. This is a military build up in preparation for something... CLEARLY!
What troubles me the most about it is not what I’m hearing others say what they think it is, but rather, what we are NOT hearing from our sons and daughters who are in the ranks.
You would think that we would be hearing some information from our troops through family channels in response to these internet doomsday warnings if it were simply a training exercise... but we are not.
If our troops are not talking about this “training exercise” with friends and family to quell our fears, it is either because the operation is classified (NOT TRAINING), OR.... because they are refusing to disseminate mis-information to the public that upper level commanders/leaders are asking them to.
