Perla Alvarez, the Associated Students of the University of Oregons (ASUO) Multicultural Advocate, believes that eating a burrito on Cinco de Mayo, as well as other things such as eating guacamole, is cultural appropriation of Mexican culture.
She begins her letter to Oregons student newspaper by writing, Its Cinco de Mayo! Yay for some of you who want to party! However, it sucks for those of us who do not celebrate this day and have to witness you appropriating our culture.
Despite the fact that most colleges in the United States push for more diversity and understanding of cultures, Ms. Alvarez believes that people celebrating Mexican culture and food is a bad thing.
Cultural appropriation, she explains, is when a group of people use aspects of other cultures; it consists a [sic] dominant group taking from a historically oppressed or a minority group of people.
...She continues, By wearing sombreros, mustaches and sarapes you are not only appropriating our culture, but you are portraying an image that does not represent us. Before you dress up, eat burritos and take tequila shots, take time to reflect on what you are doing and how it can affect those around you. Please educate yourself.

Dear Perla ... ever hear of St. Patricks Day ? Get a life idiot
Frankly, I don’t give a big rats rear end about Cinco de Mayo. But after reading this, I’m going to head into town and appropriate me some culture for lunch.
It iz VERBOTEN!
Cultural appropriation? Then the band Los Lobos shouldn’t have used guitars or accordions or violins or saxophones, which were all invented by people from other cultures.
So, that’s why all the taco bells were closes yesterday. Oh, no they weren’t. To not dishonor the southern european roots of the people of Mexico, they should have closed. Or was it French restaurants that should have closed in submission to having been defeated in that minor skirmish. Either way, beer and doritos probably made some money yesterday.
Sometime before Saint Patricks Day, this young woman should lighten up.
Meanwhile, as youre appropriating OUR culture (referring to white, anglo-saxon, european english-speaking people and their rich history of productivity, putting an end to slavery, creating and supporting a system of wealth availability for all who want to work hard, invest, save, delay gratification, you know, the people who built your university, car, housing, internet, cell phone, all that), please stop. Its wasted on you.
You can take your appropriated culture and go back to Mexico.
Me either. I call it Sink Hole De My Ho. I could care less about all these foreign holidays we celebrate here in America. We celebrate all those, and ignore the ones here that should be. The 4th of July is no longer about winning our independence. It is about bar-b-q and Nascar. Nothing about what those men and women did to free us. Same with Veterans Day and Memorial Day. Memorial Day is now about the Indy 500. Who cares about a few hundred thousand who gave their lives for them to go to the stinking race and burn a pile of pig meat. I don’t bar-b-q on any of those holidays. And I don’t bow down to the foreign holidays.
(By the way, we call this nation a "melting pot"... which means we enjoy numerous aspects of numerous cultures in any way that we wish. But make sure that you eschew any invention or improvement by an American... including electricity, air conditioning, Free Speech, your car, and mostly everything else. You wouldn't want to appropriate anything American, right? And quit speaking English, while you're at it. It's an affront to all Mexicans.)
I didn’t have a burrito! I had a tostada yesterday! So I’m all good.
Karl Marx was born May 5th.
This is another Marxist holiday, not celebrated in Mexico.
Remember Lenin’s birthday celebration? Not about the earth, either .
I ate tacos yesterday. Not because it was Cinco De Mayo, but because it was taco Tuesday and I like tacos.

Maybe we can convince libs that celebrating old communists is cultural appropriation and they should stop doing it.
The greatness of the United States is that we are the "world's melting pot". We are appropriating everybody's culture. It is what we are about. I can't begin to tell you how many different ethnic foods I eat in a year. When some left leaning airhead is offended it only adds a little additional spice to the dish.
I used my leafblower yesterday, and the thought of “appropriating culture” never even crossed my mind....
They seek to undermine and destroy Western Culture.
Once you accept that premise, more of what they say and do makes sense.
Maybe Mexicans shouldn’t speak English because that would be cultural appropriation.
