In the latest part of the outrage parade, a 16 year old Hunger Games star has declared the use of certain hair styles as racist. According to Amandla Stenberg, non-blacks wearing cornrows represent cultural appropriation and slammed popular public figures for using the style in their fame.

Buzzfeed has a particularly bizarre article relating to the video. In it, it shows stills and gifs of Stenbergs rant. In part, Stenberg declared that the rise of white rappers Macklemore and Iggy Azalea have been tied to their appropriation of black culture. She states that their increased popularity has been in part influenced by large scale protests regarding the killings of Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner.
She finishes the video with what she sees as a poignant point: What would America be like if it loved black people as much as it loves black culture?

Living inside the Hollywood echo chamber she seems to think America loves "black culture".
What exactly IS "black culture"? Pants halfway down your butt? Dumb ass flat brim, too-big hat on sideways? Misogynistic, racist, violent, obscene, obnoxious, music? Ghetto talk? 53% High School dropout rate? 70% of black children born out of wedlock?
Because that sure does seem to be what Hollywood is putting forth as "black culture".
Funny line from Mystery Science Theater 3000 version of "The Horror of Party Beach": Well, they stole this music from black people, but black people were gonna throw it away anyway.
Agreed. I’ve long believed that “race” is nothing more than a social construct. Each person is an individual.
Every individual does tend to identify with a larger group. Maybe aligning oneself with a group is a survival instinct. But it’s really not much more than that (IMHO).
And braids have been worn in many different cultures since ancient times. It’s a hairstyle that doesn’t “belong” to any one group.
I have a dream...
Yeah, and I’m thinking of Beyonce’s bleached blonde hair or indeed any black woman with dyed or bleached hair. .....cuts both ways little girl.
I'll defer to your obvious expertise.
Negroes who straighten their hair are appropriating white culture and that is DEMEANING to white culture, bullying as it were.
“Id still need Kevin Bacon to help me figure out that connection”
Love that!
I thought Corn Rows was a prison thing. Any idea what they razzed him for?
Totally agree about House of the Rising song, one of a very few songs that absolutely rocks it every single time you hear it. I just said that to hubby the other day.
They also do a fantastic version of St. James Infirmary. It’s kind of a deep track, I’ve never heard it on the radio and would probably never even have heard it at all except I had it on an album back in the day.
Back when the Beatles were big in the sixties, a number of black scribblers/whiners claimed that they, the Beatles, owed their success to recording some black songs like "Twist And Shout" and some other obscure black songs.
TAS was the only cover I can remember that became a big hit for the Fab Four. They were already huge when they recorded it, and it wouldn't have made a dent in their popularity if they hadn't. Ditto for some of their other obscure black covers that never did anything.
Just another reason for black people to hate Evil Whitey...even if Evil Whitey was Evil Brit Whitey.
They do Twist & Shout real good, and also “i saw her standing there” i am not the biggest fan,but I thing the Beatle’s version is the best.
ACTUAL LOL moment!
I wouldn’t call Wynton Marsalis playing Mozart or Hyden appropriation of white culture.
FUBU
How about allowing some individual freedom to wear whatever hairstyle one wants, unless job requirements dictate otherwise?
