PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, spoke in Portland Monday night about the loss of her son and the message she hopes his legacy will instill in others.
The free event was sponsored by the YWCA of Greater Portland at Marantha Church on Northeast 12th Avenue.
Fulton, whose teenage son was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in an incident that sparked a nationwide debate about race, talked about transforming the tragedy into social change.
Its not a speech, its not a lecture, Fulton said. Its a message.
The mother of two shared the experience of losing a son to the large crowd Monday night. After Trayvon was shot, Fulton said she didnt feel like she was going to make it.
I didnt feel like I was going to have a normal life or a regular life after my son had been murdered, she said. I just want my life back.
But after grieving, Fulton said she finally reached a breaking point. She said she realized it was her time to stand up for what she believed in.
I told myself, you can do better than this, you can do better than just cry, Fulton said. I decided at that moment that I had to do more, I had to be the voice for my son.
Fulton has since created the Trayvon Martin Foundation, which aims to create awareness of how violent crime impacts the families of the victims and to provide support and advocacy for those families in response to the murder of Trayvon Martin, the nonprofits website states.
She said her sons death was a reminder of the ugliness that still lives on in American society.
I, too, wanted to believe that we had come much further than we did, she said. You cannot tell me that it was my sons hoodie so if I take the hoodie out of the equation, what do we have left? We have the color of his skin.
Fulton reminded the audience that issues regarding race relations in America are nothing new. She said because its an ugly, uncomfortable subject, its often swept under the rug. But thats something she hopes to change.
Trayvons mother urged Portlanders to get involved in local politics and reach out to nonprofit organizations when they feel passionately about an issue.
Theres something you can do, Fulton said. When you are upset about a story, a case, a tragedy thats going on, I will challenge you to connect with one of those organizations.
She said registering to vote, and voting in small, local elections, can make a big impact when it comes to societal issues.
Make sure that youre lending your voice, make sure that youre lending your talent, she said. Because if you really want to make a difference and you really want to make a change, that change will start here with you.
Trayvon Martin was 17 when he was shot in 2012. Zimmerman claimed he shot Martin in self-defense, although Martin was unarmed at the time, and was found not guilty after a high-profile trial.
Trayvon’s father also worked through he grief by impregnating his new girlfriend.

Mother who has had several relationships
Mother who passeed her child along since she couldn't handle hom.
Child who lived with his grandmother , passed along .
Child who possessed stolen property while in school, never attributed to him since school and police were trying to minimalize criminal instances 'in-school'.
Stolen property never followed up by police .
Step-father who didn't even miss him until a day later.
Now she is the aggirieved Mother !
I don’t lose a lot of sleep about dead gangbangers who get themselves killed while committing crimes.
I think also Trayvon’s step-mother was a gang banger too
Too bad she didn’t get this involved in raising her son to be a good and productive citizen. It’s a bit late now, Ma’am.
Exactly what I was going to post. So +1
The tall tales of a crackwhore.
Didn’t she beat up the Grandma that was trying to sell Trayvon;s T-shirts????
No, that was Mike Brown’s mother.
Seriously?
The problem has been the focus on irrelevant arguments some of which are actually unsupported by the evidence.
1. George Zimmerman (GZ) racially profiled Trayvon Martin (TM) There is no evidence of this.
2. GZ disobeyed an order by the police * The civilian dispatcher, Sean Noffke, testified that he did not give GZ an order and, in fact, he, like his fellow dispatchers, are trained not make comments that sound like commands. * Noffke also testified under cross that, as a result of his asking GZ which way TM was going, GZ could have reasonably interpreted this as being asked to follow Martin. * It is also not a crime in Florida to disregard a comment made by a civilian dispatcher.
3. GZ got out of his car Not a crime on public property and not negligent either.
4. GZ followed TM Again, anyone can follow anyone on a public street unless the followee has obtained a restraining order against the follower and even there, the RS only places time, place, and manner restrictions on the person enjoined.
5. GZ wasnt really injured * Under Floridas self-defense laws, one doesnt have to be injured AT ALL to use deadly force * No one is required to refrain from defending himself while another is engaged in or attempting to commit a felony.
6. TM is dead through no fault of his own * If you believe that TM assaulted GZ, then he IS dead as a result of his own actions.
7. GZ could have left * Under Florida law, there is not a duty to withdraw rather than use deadly force * TM was straddling GZ so how the latter was supposed to leave the scene is unanswered.
8. GZ was armed and TM wasnt * Ones fists can be considered weapons and can result in severe bodily harm or death. * GZ was legally carrying a weapon * There is no requirement under the law that the same weapon be used by the assailant * A homeowner can kill an intruder whether or not he has been threatened * Those that attack cannot feign surprise if they are met with superior firepower.
9. Stand Your Ground! * SYG is NOT at issue in this trial. * The defense is a classic self-defense case.
10. Black men NEVER get to use SYG! * Wrong

The MSM, Obama, Holder, etc., were trying to use this to stir up strife and they were successful.
This is the MSM, Obama, Holder, etc....
Romans 1:..
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
Proverbs 6:16-19
haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.
GZ wasn't "following him around" and TM didn't know GZ was armed until after he initiated the assault.
Al Sharpton would be proud of that spin.
....and on the speaking circuit!
She is so right, but not in the way she thinks...
Being honest is the first step.
I still think she is living in a fantasy world. Certainly the media has not delved deeply into the family life of George Zimmerman’s assailant.
+1
Thanks for all those.
Florida was ripped up by all the hype surrounding George Zimmerman and his assailant.
Stand Your Ground is still the law of the land. And that is a good thing.
Lady, you’re past your 15 minutes of fame. Please STFU!!
10. Black men NEVER get to use SYG! * Wrong

Here is one I find more compelling:
Black Man Shoots White Teen, Jury says Self Defense. And Nobody Cares
“Roderick Scott went out of his house to confront a trio of punks breaking into cars in his Greece, New York neighborhood. Scotts story was that he fired two rounds at one of them when the young man charged him after being told to freeze and wait for the cops”
