Truly one of the best singing groups from the era, black or white . . .
Plus, there were dozens of black groups almost as good, none of whom had to resort to bling, exposed skin or profanity laced lyrics to get attention.
I'm pleased that all three of my daughters (born 1985-89) all still enjoy their music and think Nat King Cole is cool, rather than square.

Prolly doesn't help that my experience with her music was somewhat limited to whatever they showed on MTV back when it was still a music video station. Might hasta check out some of that older Whitney and see what I missed d;^)
Can't blame a girl for goin where the money is, I reckon.

BTW Patrice Rushen plays keyboards these days with Lee Ritenour- she’s really quite a talented musician, you have to be to play with him

I knew this one.
Here she is playing piano in a Humphrey Bogart movie in an intimate scene, she was an extremely sexy woman, even into old age.

She’s still married to Billy Davis. Nice to see at least one show biz marriage that has lasted.

Mine was Gladys Knight. I think she is still lovely.

This thread is reminding me how truly happy I was living in the 80’s. I’m about to hop in the DeLorean and head back there right now.

Her story is very interesting but aside from her musical persona I always found it fascinating that she shunned the spotlight. Her interest was the music, not the fame. Hearing her music instantly puts me in a great mood.

There’s only one thing to get an image as horrid as that one from one’s brain... Dare I post Helen Thomas?

See Spike Lee's School Daze for confirmation of your statement. The Wannabes and the Jigaboos.

It’s Fergie. She was found appropriate for NFL ownership, and Rush was not.

I just went through a quick dozen youtubes of the black funk bands I listened to and attended during 78-85. They were ALL wicked musicians and great vocals.
The bass lines can’t be described. Slave, Lakeside, Aurra...The 80s were just too much fun.
