Looking for best option to drop cable.

(I could live without it, but The Chief of Procuremenet will not.) Is Hulu, Netflix or Amazon Prime the best option for someone who has a few favorite shows? Will show be ONE WEEK behind on episodes or ONE SEASON? (assuming these shows on cable are not available right away) Dish is not an option (she won't allow it on the roof)

No cable for over 10 years. Netflix, Amazon and DVDs from the library can supply all the entertainment you’ll need without the mind numbing drivel from drug commercials and “the news”.

DSL doesn’t do well streaming IMO.

With DSL it depends on how close to the switching station you are. If you are within 1 to 2 miles it is fine. After that, the speed tends to drop off. Also, it depends on the condition of the lines coming into your house ( and if your ISP throttles ). I'm within 2 miles and have an average of 20Mbps download ( which is the speed I am paying for ) and can stream HD perfectly.

The best option bar none is books. I haven’t had an idiot box since March of 1995.

There is nothing on that screen that will do as much for you as reading will.

If you are close enough to Mpls/Stpaul, all you really need is an antenna and Tivo cable/ota box.
Don’t get the ota only as you are then stuck.

With this you get DVR, netflix amazon and 4 tuner recording.

Go to youtube and search ‘HD antenna comparison’ or similar. You'll find dozens of comparison vids, some are very informative.

Answer. Over the air. Invest in a great antenna setup.

Further. Watch online shows, many are free. Others you can buy DVDs for and watch anytime without commercials.

Netflix is best... signup for dvd in mail AND online streaming.

About $30 a month for EVERY SINGLE BASEBALL GAME on all your devices.

I wouldn't pay $30 for every baseball game, on anything, forever (but I listen to the Rays on radio, it helps me sleep.)

I also wouldn't pay $.05 to have every NBA player spend the night in my back yard, but that's just me.

waiting to ask - why is that commercial a viable pitch with the guy

From what I hear, they are pretty good if you are in an area that allows solid reception. Unlike old style broadcasts, the digital stays rock solid (doesn't go to snow) until it loses enough signal to just stop working. We have an old antenna (circa 1986) on a pole that extends above our roof and it picks up a number of the digital stations just fine even though not "specifically designed for digital".

I f you intend to go the over-the-air route, I would check to see how many stations might be within reach and consider mounting a pole in the ground and attaching it to a eave so it can extend above the roof line for best results.
