Mark Beasley, a member of the Navajo Nation, has started a petition for Buffalo, NY to change its "racist and offensive" name. According to Beasley, he speaks for his "Native American colleagues."
Beasley writes in his petition that "Buffalo is the name of the animal that was driven almost to extinction by the non-Native forces in order to annihilate and drive out my ancestors from the American landscape."
Further, "Within only a few years from the beginning of the campaign, all Native nations were driven off their lands and into reservations, where we have prior and since been unduly subjugated and and [sic] exposed to genocidal horrors unimaginable to the rest of the world and throughout history."
For these reasons, Beasley writes, Buffalo "should change their offensive and racist names containing the word "Buffalo.""
If the city does this, they will "End the use of racist and genocidal imagery and symbols toward Native Americans today" and "End the pain and denigration these symbols and images incite and the damage to the psyches of Native Americans everywhere."

So, how small of a fraction of Navajo is the very native-sounding Mark Beasley, lol? Somebody’s trying too hard. The Cherokee I’ve known would call him a member of the Wannabee tribe.

From now on it's Behayma, New York.
I guess no more RED states next.+
Need to start changing the name of many towns, cities, and states then.
I’ve been saying, that once they get them to change the “Redskins”, they’ll go after the “Washington” next, since he owned slaves.
And the capitol—Caucasiapolis.
Indiana has suggested exactly that. The state has billboards —in Illinois —that read, “Illannoyed? Come to Indiana, a state that works.”
Dear Mr Beasley,
The people of Buffalo are already being punished by living in Buffalo.
Muchos smooches,

Well, the Native American killed off the Mammoth—So there!!
Our culture is caving to every whiney 3 year old in the room.
hmmm....
makes a good tagline.
And the saddest thing is that the 3 year olds don't recognize that the Indian names (or nicknames) were applied out of RESPECT for the native Americans that they were named for.
The "redskins" were renowned for being tough fighters and wily opponents. Unlike being wimpy, crybaby opportunists like the originator of this suit.
When it gets to whining about Buffalo by a guy whose tribe never saw one, this PC BS has gone a bit too far.
Then they need to rename that icon of depravity - Chippewa Street.
I stand corrected, thank you.
Cheektowaga or Tonawanda?
West Seneca, actually .... I could see the water on Buffalo Creek from across the street during flood stages.
Maria Cantwell was all over the demand to change the name of the Washington Redskins. I wrote to her and told her I was offended that her state was named after a man who owned slaves. And all kinds of schools and streets in her state are named Washington. I want that changed. :)
Those were the days when people smoked in restaurants and the waitress was actually named Blanche.
Small world, I used to live about a mile west from there, towards Union ... Very familiar with the locale ;-)
I hadn’t been at that place for years; last time was a few years ago for a funeral dinner, from that parlor across the corner. I guess it’s been under newer management for quite awhile.
