The University of Minnesota has banned the use of race when describing crime suspects when only a "limited" amount of information is known about them. Specifically, if the race of the suspect is known, but some other identifiable traits are not, the college will not release the race of the criminal.
The college uses "Crime Alerts" to warn students of suspects or criminals who may endanger them. However, over the course of several months, the university has looked into how to improve the system. The solution that they announced yesterday: you can no longer identify a suspect using his race if not much is known about him or her.
The University of Minnesota's President, Eric Kaler, explained that their "Crime Alerts may unintentionally reinforce racist stereotypes of Black men, and other people of color, as criminals and threats.
"That in turn," he continued, "can create an oppressive climate for some members of our community, a climate of suspicion and hostility."

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck...
“The alleged assailant, whose race cannot be identified, is about 5’9”, 20 years of age, wearing a FUBU hoodie and pants low enough to show about 3” of butt crack....”
I would read this as a tacit acknowlegement of the statistics showing Black being responsible for a disproportionate amount of the crimes?
With the result of the “corrective action” being (as others said above) the presumption that Blacks are ALWAYS responsible for ALL of the crime.
It is really amusing, here, to see how Progressives’ convoluted feel-good/sensitivity pretzel illogic takes a situation they feel needs to be corrected (social bias against Blacks stemming from identifying race in this case) and makes it magnitudes worse ...
OK. North Dakota. Would you please go grab a crowbar and hit Minnesota in the head with it? Maybe that will kickstart their brain.
Well, I can only be content in my personal knowledge of what has happened with Clery Act notifications that I personally receive. But I will tell you that IF there ever is a case that falls under the Clery Act that happens with the institution identified in THIS particular instance here where the perpetrator is WHITE, it will be trumpeted from every parapet and minaret on campus - perception, generalization and ‘stigma’ be damned.

I am sorry but there is not a small enough crowbar in North Dakota that can be used to impact the tiny brain remaining in Minnesota. All local crowbars are big enough to be useful in the real world. Minnesota is beyond redemption.
I am so glad I skipped going to the UofM.. and joined the Marines as a yout’ instead.
The education I received serving my country rather than bein indoctrinated into a liebral way of living that pretends all is well, even as the opposite is true.
.. and people send their kids there to this day.
Scott Walker had a clue.
The people running the U haven’t any.
Descriptives normally used in identifying perpatrators are not "races": "black teen" ("black" is not a race); "white male" ("white" is not a race); "hispanic woman" (not sure what "hispanic" is, but it's not a race), etc.
Won't make much difference what with all the Ta'queeshas, Quandibs and Ka'shawns runnin' around. They'll have to stop using names.
Well, then, don’t mention the race, give more detailed descriptions:
E.g. the suspect is a male about 6 foot tall, with straight black hair and latte colored skin; or the suspect is a female about 5 foot 4 inches tall with skin described by witnesses as between bittersweet chocolate and ebony in color, with elaborately braided black hair; or, again, the suspect is a male 5 foot 7 inches tall with blotchy pink skin and hair the color of cornsilk.
Maybe English majors with specialties in poetry could be engaged to write even more evocative suspect descriptions.

“The suspect is described as a white male, 5-feet-10 to 6 feet tall, with a medium build. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black sweatpants with three white stripes on the side.
This is the first crime alert the U has issued since announcing Feb. 25 that it would not provide a description of a criminal’s physical appearance unless it’s detailed enough to aid in an arrest.”
The first sentence does absolutely nothing to support the gibberish of the second. Political correctness demands that we be unblinking consumers of the government promoted assertions. Obviously, the writer of this article and his editor are both willing disseminators of the party line.
