VANITY: Move to Seattle? Any young Conservatives in the city or state?

My daughter is graduating this summer--she has a dear friend who lives in Seattle and has suggested my daughter might move out there. Daughter could move anywhere she can find job in her field.

My daughter is a conservative tho not a political junkie like her mom LOL. Her friend is probably a moderate, but not particularly political. I have a "moderate" republican friend who said Seattle is just growing by leaps and bounds and lots of young people are moving there.

Though I have no direct say in the matter as daughter is an adult and I have not been in Seattle except for the airport, I am not sure how I feel about the city Seattle or state Washington? From what I have read, most conservative liberty-lovers have left...but I have no first-hand information.

I would appreciate input in the event that my daughter asks for my opinion--eh she usually does.

Anyone have any thoughts on Seattle (preferably first-hand) to share?

I appreciate it. Thanks!

...but it appears that if you are not leftist, you will feel out of place.

That is DEFINITELY true. I thrive on it, though. However, you can lose your job over it, especially if you are young. The reason is that the younger you are, the less skill you have in knowing when NOT to say things like Al Gore is a nincompoop.

No, I’m not kidding.

"How on earth can you say there are 4 distinct seasons when there is only a 20 degree difference between the summer and winter averages?"

1. Because snow between April 1 and November 15 is very rare.

2. Because daily high temps between October 15 and April 30 are rarely above 70.

3. Because we have many deciduous trees that shed their leaves between October 10 and November 20.

4. Because you can comfortably go coatless in 65 degree weather but not in 45 degree weather.

5. Because you can comfortably wear a swimsuit to the beach in 72 degree weather but not in 62 degree weather.

Not all 4-season climates have harsh extremes between the seasons, but they still have distinct seasons.

There are probably some down at Ft. Lewis. And be sure to visit the post’s museum, you can see it from the interstate.

Daughter’s friend (who lives in Seattle now) has a fiance who is in Army, so they probably live down that way. Thanks for museum tip BTW.

It rains. A lot.

If your daughter likes the sunshine she should is going to be in for a rude shock.

The joke about how people in Seattle don’t tan, they rust is not a joke. :)

Clever joke :)

Live anywhere you want and where you can get a job ... if you’re having trouble getting a job ... or ... where you can get the best job, if you’ve got several offers.

The nice thing about that location of the country are the outdoors and the mountains, and being close to the ocean, too. Of course, the ocean is colder, that far north, but it’s still nice. There’s cross country skiing, downhill, mountain climbing, hiking, a good amount of bicycling and other activities. It’s fun riding the ferries, you can go over to the San Juan Islands, easily, or continue on over to Victoria, Canada.

Drive on up to Vancouver from Seattle, and ride on some of the biggest ferries in the world. You’re close to Oregon and there’s a lot to do there, too.

Take a ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert. The sun sets, up there at around 11:30 PM to midnight in the summer ... :-) ...

There’s great skiing up in Vancouver, too. Be sure to see the rain forest in the Olympic Peninsula, don’t miss Mt. Rainier, and be sure to see the volcano ... Mt. St. Helen.

As long as your daughter is confirmed and settled in her political views, she won’t have any problems. She won’t change the state or some other people’s minds, but they are not going to beat her up or kill her ... :-) ...

Tell her to make her money, get rich (or at least a comfortable amount of money, and live her life well!

Thank you for the positive report. Yes, she seems confirmed in her views 0 as I said tho, hope she does not fall in love with a far lefty ;) Got enough problems to contend with LOL.

It is a beautiful city (well except all of the junkies in Pioneer Square). I was there 2 years ago and still miss it. Never ran out of stuff to do. I would totally live there or across Eliot Bay.

But it is super lib. And horribly expensive!

junkies in Pioneer Square? Yikes! well, II see them on the way to midway airport when getting off the interstate, but I am in a car with doors locked....

Anyway, glad for the testimonial!

You say it is horribly expensive.

Is everything expensive—like insurance, taxes, food, utilities? Or is it primarily rent?

It’s not that bad ... the “reputation” is built up to be worse than it really is.

Understood. That is encouraging should she find work there and decide to move west. I am from Chicagoland area and as I kid when we went on vacations, people truly thought Al Capone was riding thru town with his mob. Still holds true today—there are some wonderful parts of the City...eh and some not so wonderful parts too, but it is good to have a balanced view.

very morning I would check to see if the animals were lining up two by two.

If they weren’t I would go get a coffee and go in to work. :)

On the bright they have very good coffee there. But you do have to get a cover for your cup or it will be so diluted by the rain on your walk that it is undrinkable

Animals lining up two by two LOL!
She does love coffee :)

I live in the Tacoma area. It’s not a bad place but extremely liberal. I suggest she find a Christ centered church to attend, otherwise she’ll get caught up with the crowd.

Finding good church is a good idea wherever she ends up :)

I’m hoping to transfer to a Christian college up in Seattle next semester. I have family up there, but not being from Seattle (or even Washington) myself, I cannot say much about it. I imagine it’s full of nutcases, but most big cities are. I wish your daughter luck. :)

Thank you and good luck to you too!

I’m in Oklahoma now, but having been in Oregon for 40 years, and having traveled all through Oregon, Washington and British Columbia ... I still wish I was back there.

I’m not prying, bushwon.. but could your daughter be interested in Seattle simply because she has a friend there? I would imagine moving to a new area for a job is frightening in a way. Moving to a new area and not knowing a soul is even more frightening. (perhaps this is a female trait vs a male trait.. don’t know for sure?) Either way, she sounds like she has a good head on her shoulder. Do you know the friend? Is he/she a good person that will watch out for her? If she moves to Seattle and doesn’t like it, she always has resume material for another job later. Good luck!

No problem. I have encouraged her to explore a little—go where she wants—she does not need to move back home or to hometown or stay in Michigan where she is a student.

She has friends and relatives in various parts of the country, but this dear friend happens to have moved to Seattle (they were college roommates)due to her fiance being stationed in the army there, so yes there is a friend/support aspect to where she ls looking.. Her friend is good person and will watch out for her—never let her down, etc.

Thanks for your input. :)

One of our religious friends told us that Seattle and San Frncisco, along with other cities I can’t remember, are controlled by demons and are scheduled for total annihilation by God.

Yikes. Eh I can think of some cities that might be on that list Seattle is not that big....

My son goes to Seattle Pacific University (Christian School). Of course some of the profs are liberals, but the kids that my son hangs out with are all pretty conservative.

There was a shooting there last year (some older guy with no relationship to the school shot up the place killing one). I was very impressed with the student's prayerful reaction to it - much of it on their own.

I recall a few internet messages talking about banning guns, etc. Those were shot down real quick by students and teachers saying it wasn't about guns - it was about evil. And that God will be victorius over evil.

So there are people out here that are conservative - but often I feel like I am in exile!

Good luck to her and hopefully she has a good conservative stance that those liberals in two years won’t affect her mind

So far, so good.

Because she is not very political and being around liberals who are and watching their media for a couple of years could affect her.

She is not a political junkie, but she isn’t totally unaware..she does have Drudge on her phone ;)

All millennials are just so busy—my 2 sons each usually work 12 hours a day...often more—they have very little time to follow much current news, and the West Coast is the Left Coast—my son lives in Cali and says it is different from the midwest.

Make sure to rent an apartment within stone’s throw of the Lenin statue.

Then throw stones at it.

My wife and I moved back to Alabama from her home in Seattle 9 years ago. It was the best thing we could have done. Says my wife. She lived in Seattle most of her life and could not wait to get out of that cess pool. It is the liberal and homo capital of the country, along with San Francisco. There are very, very, very few conservatives in the area. We lived in Bremerton which was across Puget Sound from Seattle. We rode the ferry to and from work every day. That cost us both over $1,200 each in ferry ticket money each year. Plus the cost of parking each month at the ferry terminal. Very expensive area to live in. If your daughter thinks she is going to a conservative area, wrong. 98% of Seattle is liberal, homo approving, Obama, Algore loving dimocrats. We are so happy that we finally got out of that dump. I refuse to go back to even visit. She still has family up there and has flown back to visit a couple of times, but not me. Once I left, I left. So, myself, I would fight my kid to keep them from living there or any other liberal hell hole.

Yeah, you have summed up my concerns. No place is perfect, but seems liberals are now becoming leftists and radicals....they can really screw up wonderful towns/states...I know this because I live in one :(

One of sons works in San Jose—not sure if they are liberal or libertarian, but it’s not conservative. Soo one out of three kids is in the Bible belt :)

I don’t know if I could “fight” her, but my goal is going to be to present some valid concerns—and pros and cons, etc. She went to Mexico City this summer for a wedding—I put up a vanity and lots of concerns and criticism—actually people strongly implied I was a bad parent if I let her go. Well, we went over all the concerns and safety issues. She went and had a wonderful chance of a lifetime trip to see a dear friend get married—beautiful formal wedding—they really know how to throw a party down there BTW. So I am hesitant to come down too hard/fight her—but wherever she ends up, she has to be smart about it...But thanks for your thoughts—I am hoping she goes to visit her brother in Texarkana and falls in love with the south (tho the whole immigrant issue has me concerned about TX)—she has never been to the South, but she loves country music :)

Thanks for your input.

It didn’t affect me that way in Portland. I didn’t have to “work at it” or “fight it” ... I was just me ... :-) ...

I suspect if her “position” is not “really her own” ... then maybe. That’s why I said if she’s confirmed and settled in what she knows, she won’t have any problem at all.

Good observation. I am hoping she is confirmed and settled—did get some testing in college, but she went to school in a conservative area and not too much propaganda in the sciences.
