Last week, many newspapers ran some version of a Washington Post piece entitled “The U.S. government is poised to withdraw longstanding warnings about cholesterol.” Reporter Peter Whoriskey lavishes more than 1800 words on a story that is well-summarized in his first two paragraphs:

The nation’s top nutrition advisory panel has decided to drop its caution about eating cholesterol-laden food, a move that could undo almost 40 years of government warnings about its consumption.

The group’s finding that cholesterol in the diet need no longer be considered a “nutrient of concern” stands in contrast to the committee’s findings five years ago, the last time it convened. During those proceedings, as in previous years, the panel deemed the issue of excess cholesterol in the American diet a public health concern.

Apparently, this information—in advance of the official publication Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2015—was leaked via a video of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s December, 2014 meeting and remarks from knowledgeable sources.

Surely, the public, which still slavishly relies on the pronouncements from these mountebanks, will be more confused than ever. Here we are in 2015, and these brilliant experts finally determine that...

According to the progressives, you need those experts to shepherd you to make the "correct" decisions.

"these brilliant experts finally determine that dietary cholesterol has little effect on serum cholesterol—a fact that has been known for at least 24 years, documented in dozens of studies."

I believe Dr. Atkins was saying this back in the 80's. He claimed dietary cholesterol did not convert to cholesterol in the body and that high cholesterol was the body's response to a lack of nutrients often caused by low fat diets. Fat is necessary for most nutrients to be absorbed by the body.

I would say that it means that YOUR DIET doesn’t have the effect that they were saying before ... BUT ... if you do have a problem with the “bad cholesterol” that you’ll have to get it under control, even though “your diet” won’t get it under control for you.

If your medication will do that, then you should continue with it.

Leading lives that were solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.

Wait. Did you say “before” or “after”?

If I recall my independent studies of nutrition correctly, according to Adelle Davis, the average high-fat American Diet contained 850 mg of cholesterol. The average body produces 3500 mg of cholesterol daily. “High cholesterol”, means high “serum” cholesterol, or too much of it in the blood. The Cholesterol molecule is huge and must be broken down to it’s component parts in order to be metabolized and pass through the cell walls. In order to do that, the B vitamins choline is necessary, the richest natural source of this b-vitamin is none other than the egg yolk.

Almost every cell wall in the human body is composed of cholesterol, the brain is almost exclusively composed of cholesterol. I would like to see some studies of the detrimental effects on the brain from low-fat diets in pre and post natal infants.

"how...mankind survive"

We now have record numbers of centenarians. That means these people who are one hundred years are older grew up in decades where nobody said much of anything concerning your diet except to try and make sure you ate three squares a day. Lots of eggs, bacon, butter, grease, and other fatty "unhealthy" foods. How did they make it this far if all those foods were killers?

Arguably they also grew up in a time when manual labor was the norm. The people who are centenarians today tended not to have office jobs and if they did they were very active after hours.

Yes, but there are still many millions of people who work hard, physical jobs. The studies showing people would suffer horrible deaths from eating the wrong foods never made exceptions for people with hard, physical jobs (as far as what I've read).

They stoutly maintained that EVERYBODY!!!, regardless of their occupation, would die agonizing, horrible deaths from eating the wrong foods.

Expert - in some cases the following definition applies:

“Ex”, means “used to be”, and a “spurt” is nothing but a drip under pressure. (yes, I know the spelling is off, but then it wouldn’t be punny)

At the end of the day, the insistence on having experts rule our lives is a product of the progressive movement. It’s hardly surprising that they only research the “common good” or in this case the common bad. Individuals don’t matter, all that matters is the group.
