The Longview Police Department placed three officers on leave after a 17-year-old girl was shot and killed in the lobby of the station last week, the Marshall News Messenger reported.
According to officials, Kristiana Coignard entered the Texas police station on Thursday evening brandishing a weapon. Police spokeswoman Kristie Brian said Coignard used a phone in the lobby to call police dispatch and asked to see an officer.
When officers arrived in the lobby, she "came at the officers" with a weapon, according to Brian. Police did not confirm what type of weapon Coignard had, but Longview Mayor Jay Dean said that she was carrying a knife, according to the Marshall News Messenger.
Justice of the Peace James Mathis said Coignard was shot "multiple times," according to the Marshall News Messenger.
Police have not released many details about the incident. It remains unclear why Coignard entered the police station and what occurred before she was shot.
The 17-year-old was living with her aunt, Heather Robertson, who told ThinkProgress that her niece had been struggling with mental illness.
I think it was a cry for help," Robertson said about Coignard's actions last week. "I think they could have done something. They are grown men. I think there is something they are not telling us."
Robertson said her niece has struggled with depression and bipolar disorder since her mother died when she was four years old. Coignard has been hospitalized twice after trying to commit suicide. Robertson told ThinkProgress that Coignard "was only violent with herself."
The three officers involved in the incident were placed on leave, and the Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.
“one of the guys did a flip, flew 30 feet through the air and took a knife out of a guys hand with his bare foot.”
In my younger days but at 64 it’s 15 foot tops.
“This statement is incoherent.”
Perhaps if you are trying to excuse the use of deadly force by our government representatives.
lol yeah I wasn’t there so that makes it ok that these 3 police officers killed this woman rather than disarming her.
They did it because they were trained to shoot at the slightest risk of personal injury. But hey, when you’re a hammer every problem looks like a nail.
I don't know what happened in that station office in Texas.
But your story is very convincing, the quick damage a knife can do to anyone, cop or not.
So now this girl had a semi-automatic weapon with a ‘massive’ ammo stockpile. lol
Those comparisons are stupid when leftists use them or anyone else does.
Wow. No SA by those polocia at all. Holy cow that guy was tough.
Now see, what ya gotta do is...
Sorry, but the statement is incoherent.
“Cops are too quick on the trigger...” is a clear identification of culpability - alleging an error in judgment that leads to the premature application of deadly force.
“...regardless of whose fault it is” (coupled with the first part of the sentence) says that even if the person shot instigated the incident and is wholly at fault, the cops are still at fault.
I have not expressed an opinion on this specific incident, not having enough information to take on a well-informed stance. Casting aspersions on my motivations does not alter the flaws in your expressed argument, FRiend.
You are trying to explain the obvious to folks who have not been exposed to sudden violence and watch too much TV. I spent a large portion of my 70 years in bad neighborhoods (Countries) and have collected a couple of holes and several dozen stitches from the actions of people I deemed to be incompetent. They weren't!
The only fair fight is the one you walk away from.
“Cops are too quick on the trigger regardless of whose fault it is.”

Do you have any stats from a reputable source that backs up that statement”

Listen, it’s very clear from your posts that you are weak, since you have asserted more than once that you will kill even a child (your words) if they wave a knife at you. And that’s understandable, since weak people frequently overreact to threats of force on their person... but most normal people would not kill a child waving a knife if they can help it. And 3 cops should be trained to deal with such threats differently than by killing a weak girl.
All we are saying is if there were three self-assured self- confident men in that room, instead of 3 blue beach balls, as another poster called them, then this 90 pound, mentally ill girl would be alive, not dead.
I had a schizoprenic off his meds try to stab my partner with a ballpoint pen once. we fought for 10 minutes to get the pen out of his hand and the cuffs on him. It felt like a century. oh yeah, the guy was 60+ skinny and about 5’8”. adrenaline is a hell of a drug.

P.S. there were 4 officers and a sergeant there. it still took 10 minutes.

As I said on a similar thread the other day...a few years ago my husband’s grandmother told me that, as we get older, we really have to guard that our hearts don’t become hard. It tends to creep up on you.
Thanks for writing me back, It is upsetting to me to think police who are sworn to protect and serve are so ready to pull the trigger. I’ve have plenty of friends who were cops and I’m sure they would not have shot to kill, and in a group of three they would have been more than capable of disarming the girl.
It never ceases to amaze me how people on FR, that were not there and have no knowledge of how this incident went down, can armchair quarterback a tragic situation like this for both the girl and the officers.
They illustrated what they cAlled the 21 foot rule last season on the tv series justified
"you will kill even a child (your words) if they wave a knife at you."
Quote it to me in my exact words from the post it appears in more than once, otherwise you are a stinking liar, and I don't care what liars are saying.
I’m 6’4”, and no, I do not know how easily they could have knocked her out with that reach differential.
Maybe she was knife happy.
These cops seem trained well enough to me.
Threat eliminated.
