Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) says he supports a pathway to citizenship for immigrants living in the country illegally as part of an overhaul of the nation's immigration system.
"If people want to come here and work hard and benefit, I don't care whether they come from Mexico or Ireland or Germany or Canada or South Africa or anywhere else," Walker said Tuesday during an interview with the Daily Herald Media Editorial Board of Wisconsin. "I want them here."
Walker was then asked about the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the country illegally. The editorial board asked if he could "envision a world where with the right penalties and waiting periods and meet the requirements where those people could get citizenship?"
"Sure," Walker responded. "I mean I think it makes sense." Walker's comments came roughly a week after the Democratic-controlled Senate passed a bipartisan immigration reform proposal that includes a pathway to citizenship.
The proposal strengthens border security along the U.S.-Mexico border by doubling the length of fencing across the border and also doubling the number of border patrol agents. Walker said he had not fully reviewed the Senate bill and has not taken a position on the legislation.
Walker's comments separate him from some conservative House lawmakers who have said they cannot support the Senate immigration reform bill because it includes a pathway to citizenship.

They might still be right, who knows? This article is 17 months old. It is not whatever Walker’s current thinking might be.
+1
It’s just politics.
Pathway means qualification hoops.
Illegal means go to the back of the line.
who the heck am I going to vote for?
***************************
Good question.
It's not having them become citizens I object to, it's 1., simple fairness to those who went through the work of doing this legally, and 2., how making the legal would encourage more people to come here illegally.
Dealing with #1 is pretty simple - we simply make them wait until everyone who was ahead of them in line has obtained citizenship.
Dealing with #2 is more complicated. I've never seen a proposal that wouldn't create incentives for more people to come illegally.
But I'm not rigid about it. It's certainly a conversation I'm willing to have ... AFTER WE'VE SECURED THE BORDER!!!
If you say you are against a pathway, you are saying ANYONE who overstayed a visa can NEVER be a citizen.
Walker is not giving illegals the green flag and the inside track.
So many GOP pols feign opposition to amnesty, while secretly (and increasingly, openly) trying to get it through, that we should not take a risk with someone who has been so pro-amnesty (and pro-open borders!) so very recently.
No, thanks.
attaining the full right of U.S. citizenship should be a multi-generational process ,and so codified with amendments to the U.S. Constitution . Legal immigration into the USA should be allowed on a closely monitored and limited basis . Anyone violating terms of their initial immigration would be black-listed and never allowed to attain to full citizenship , even if they were not deported for whatever infraction . Once an immigrant completes a 10 year period and shows complete proficiency in English language ( reading, writing& speaking) they can apply for U.S. citizenship , at which time they will have to further demonstrate a detailed knowledge of U.S. history and civics . Such 1st generation U.S. immigrants, those born abroad , should NEVER be granted the right to vote in U.S. national elections , or run for any elected office . That right ( to vote) should begin to occur in those children , born in the USA to legal immigrant parents , after the age of 25 , or after the age of 18 if they have served or are serving in the US Armed Services . Children born abroad ( even over the border ) and legally brought into the USA should be required to fall under the classifications of their 1st generation immigrant parents . The rights to vote only begin to appear in the generation of their own USA born children . There should be ZERO amnesty . If a person from any country is found to be living in the USA illegally , for whatever reason or rationale , they should be politely escorted out of the country , along with their entire family ( we do not want to break up families...) for that first offense . If they are discovered to have returned , then those people should be arrested and assigned to minimum wage paid work detention , building our border boundaries , fences , walls , etc ; for a period of 3 years . With monies earned being able to be sent to relatives in whatever country they come from . Minors in their company should be immediately returned to relatives designated in their countries of origin . Anyone determined to be an illegal alien in this country and found to have committed felony acts that result in the death of US citizens should be summarily executed ( by hanging) , without appeal or any chance of simple incarceration . Change the Constitution , and end ‘student visas’ let them study in their own countries , not ours .
Why does your post misleadingly indicate it is from today?
****************
How does it idicate if is from today. It plainly has the
2013 issue date in the date place.
Looks like the mods have corrected the date.
But this stuff happens all the time. Is it because the FReeper has an agenda? Sometimes.
But usually its just due to lazy/sloppy posting habits.
Ted Cruz 2016!!!!
Somebody needs to tell Scotty that they don’t want no “steenkin’ pathway to citizenchip”. They want free money and other free stuff to take back to Mexico with them.
I don’t have a problem with someone posting an older article, but imho, they should explain the relevance.
So does Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
Reject ALL pro-amnesty Republicans.
Pure BS. The back of the line begins in their home countries. We bring in 1.1 million legal immigrants a year. Why should we reward people who entered this country illegally and committed multiple other crimes to stay here including ID theft, working illegally, tax evasion, etc. When you reward something, you get more of it.
We had a "one-time" amnesty in 1986. The proponents promised it would never happen again. The USG estimated that 1 million would apply, but the true number turned out to be 2.7 million. The process was rife with fraud. And there was a surge once the amnesty was announced.
Now we have 12 to 20 million illegals. Once legalized, they will be sponsoring tens of millions of their relatives thru chain migration, i.e., family reunification. Why should we undermine the Rule of Law by legalizing these lawbreakers?
Why does it matter when it was written? Do you really want to vote for someone who can’t even stand firm on their core principles? Haven’t you figured it out, that that is almost always a horrible sign?
Ok...so now he senses how the political winds may be blowing and changes his position....does that somehow make him acceptable.
This starting to make me wonder if the only reason he opposed unions was to cozy up to big business. He’s definitely in the Chamber of Commerce amnesty camp.
I’m looking for solid core principles on the 2nd amendment and Illegals.
Walker doesn’t pass the smell test.
Okay
15 years
Stay current and commit no violent crimes or felonies.
No government handouts.
$1,200 for every year you are here
College tuition paid at the same rate and standards held the same as for any other American, when your children go to college or university. You do want to become an American?
Stay current on taxes.
Oh, and you’ll have pay a $6,000 application fee.
Don’t act like it’s a hardship. You already burned $5-10k paying coyotes to get you here and you make way more money than you made in your home country.
If you don’t start the process then you are subject to deportation at any time and without any so called due process, which should apply in very rare limited situations and there must be a low cap on the number we allow.
For starters. ...
