I'm not sure if you guys have heard, but Pakistan is great this time of year. Most of what I know about Pakistan comes from watching Homeland which is probably based on a true story or something. Anyway, second and third world countries have really stepped up their game in the firearms production.

“Second world”? The old Communist bloc is still with us, then? The second world has always been about arms production.
No food, no proper shelter, no hospitals or medical attention, no schools, no paved streets, no heated homes, no indoor plumbing... etc. But EVERYONE has a weapon.
Right.
Weapons making is THE cottage industry there. Always was.
Years ago I watched a news segment of documentary about gun makers in Pakistan. An old man made an L1A1 - by hand - out of scrap metal from a ship. I was stunned.
This is a testament to the idiot gun banners these days that think they can eliminate firearms worldwide.
Human ingenuity never ceases to amaze me.
I remember footage from Peshawar back when Reagan was funding the Mujahadeen to go after the Soviets. Blacksmiths with fire pits and tools right out of the Old West making functional knock-offs of AK-47s.
I saw a documentary or video once where they went to some obscure village in Pakistan. They showed store fronts with almost every weapon imaginable and little kids making ammunition...............It was something you would expect to see in one of Mel Gibson’s post apocalyptic movies.......
With each part being had fitted, I guess that the concept of universal parts is beyond them. Also notice that there wasn’t so much as a pair of calipers in the whole video.
Looks straight to me.......... LOL! Maybe they didn’t want to give away any of their trade secrets. Maybe a master gage fitment tool in the background someplace?
I think I saw something like that, too.
It reminds me of the movie, ‘King of the Khyber Rifles’ I watched, years ago. It was sort of like that.
Growing poppies and making/repairing hand guns is just about all they do there.
Oh... and slap their wives around
Same as I saw, no dial calipers and every part hand fitted.
I did see calipers, what we might call dividers to transfer a dimension, but no scales...
Did you notice that seemed to be drilling a bore, gun barrel without lubricant? It drilled like aluminum, but even then it would require lube. One other thing, in order to drill a straight bore, the drill has to be sharpened precisely. Other than a grinder, hand grinder, there was nothing in that shop to do it correctly. I did learn years ago to sharpen a twist drill by hand, but not to use on a gun barrel.
Kewel!!!
Homeland was incredible last night!!!
I don’t know if this was the same documentary, but Michael Palin (Monty Python) did one of his travel documentaries, called Himalaya. The whole production was excellent, but his crew did pass through some small Pakistani village with a thriving hand-made gun industry.
Palin made the very clear point that these guns were pretty much exact functional replicas of nearly any gun otherwise available, all for a fraction of the cost. I remember him being quite startled by live-fire testing in a narrow alley.
Great show! Made we want to visit. Sort of.
I was actually holding a hand-made Pakistani Colt1911 and PPSh-41 clones in my hands. It is a huge industry there and both quality and price varies greatly. Some pieces are crappy and crude, other are literally a masterpieces.
I dig the soundtrack, but I count at least five OSHA violations there.
I would imagine that the QA is sorta like that for parachute riggers: You packed them, you jump with one. But in this case, it would be: You made it, you fire it first.
