Time Magazine: Men Who Don’t Sit and Cross their Legs are “Manifestation of Patriarchal Privilege”

Time Magazine has declared that men who are able to sit and not cross their legs are a “manifestation of patriarchal privilege.”

In an article called, “‘Man Spreaders,’ There’s No Excuse for Not Closing Your Legs on the Subway,” Time’s Etiquette section slammed men who do not sit with their legs together. But more than it being impolite and against etiquette, there is a much bigger problem with men like this: they are proliferating “the patriarchy.”

The article explains that men sitting with their legs apart “is the most visual manifestation of patriarchal privilege and that is why it is especially angering.”

...The author, Brian Moylan, then states that people don’t like men with their legs apart because “everyone” thinks of the oppression of women: “It says to everyone, “I find this comfortable and I am a man so my comfort comes before all else in this entire universe and especially you.” That’s why people hate this.”

The patriarchy is dead as far as I know. However when the culture changed THAT left no rules for men as a group. Now men are individuals who mostly are making it up as they go. It's like herding cats.

Time magazine is 100% desperate.

They have been hounding me via junk mail for the past year or so saying “We want you back” and “We miss you”.

I gave up my subscription roughly TWENTY years ago,have moved twice, and they still found me.

I noticed that Time Magazine having a biased left wing shift in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s and has only got worse since. When writing term papers in high school and college, I began to notice that Newsweek, Time, and US News and World Report seem to all have the same articles, same slant, same bias, and very little difference between the three of them. It is no wonder they are all failed magazines as their readership is compromised of liberals that don't reflect the majority of the population.

OK, several comments.

First, to get my Grammar NAZI out of the way. There is NO such usage as “angering” as used here. Along with the hated “concerning” and “worrying”.

Second, despite the title, it is not clearly about CROSSING legs as closing. Which is the polite thing to do, not showing yourself pofligate, AND keeping out of the way of others’ paths and space, not thoughtlessly taking up space.

Even if it is about crossing, that is no big deal. My dad crossed legs plenty, helps keep comfortable while out of the way.

But as far as it being sexist, or dominant, I think that is a bunch of nonsense. It’s just thoughtlessness, probably not trained to be gentlemen. As a woman I am never thinking about men, “you are hating women or threatening me” because he shows himself.
