Black bears are large, potentially dangerous animals. A retired wildlife officer was forced to shoot one in his Florida home on 22 October, in Lake County.
The bear broke though a window and entered the home. When the man yelled at it, it turned and came toward him. That is when he fired, at a distance that he estimated at 10 feet.
From wftv.com:
I was very scared. I figured when I yelled it would take off, but it didnt. It just looked right at me and started coming toward the window, where I was at, so thats when I fired, Peters said.
The bear was a very large black bear, weighing 500 lbs.
When officers dragged the bear from the house, it left a large blood trail.
The area where the bear was shot was trashed.

The necessary cleanup is incentive to prefer that the bear exit the house voluntarily.
Bears that have become accustomed to humans are dangerous.

As much as I hate to predict, I’m sure a PETA protest is to follow shortly.

Oh, shot in someone else's home.
I thought for a moment the bear had been shot in its own home.

The article doesn’t seem to say what he shot it with. I’m curious.

I am in the Poconos and a black bear was in my house when the previous owner lived here. It broke in a porch door and went to the kitchen. Police were able to chase it back out through the porch...

Would a 12 ga shotgun be effective? If so, what shell, a slug perhaps?
To: marktwain
Excellent gun for dropping a bear.

Yes, definitely. I have eaten bear a number of times. It can be very good.
I liked it best, roasted. It tasted like roast beef.

Yes, slugs would be the way to go.

PETA will say the bear was surrendering and had his hands up. The homeowner shot him in cold blood...

BAD gun! That bear should have been welcomed! Doors-like fences- are unfair barriers to the pleasures we enjoy that we SHOULD share with others-especially native wildlife! /sarc LOL
