This twitter post showed Zehat Bibeau with what appears to be a Winchester lever action rifle. At first, it was unclear if this were the same firearm that he used to shoot Cpl. Cirillo.
The BBC quickly came up with an identification of the firearm used - a Winchester lever action shotgun! From the BBC:
He said police were trying to piece together how Zehaf-Bibeau acquired a Winchester lever-action shotgun, as he was banned from owning firearms due to his criminal convictions. Then the Ottowa Sun took a shot at the subject. From the Ottowa Sun:
Police still don't know how he got his hands on the Winchester 3030 pump-action rifle he used to gun down Cpl. Cirillo at the War Memorial. The National Post finally got it right. From the Nationalpost.com:
At a Thursday press conference, RCMP commissioner Bob Paulson confirmed that Zehaf-Bibeau had carried out the shootings with a Winchester 30-30 lever action rifle, a quintessentially Canadian bush gun that is not normally the first choice of would-be terrorists. Here is a clearer picture of the model of rifle used. This is a Winchester model 94, made prior to 1964, in caliber 30-30.
Police said he was armed with a lever-action Winchester rifle, an old-fashioned, relatively slow-firing weapon. The 30-30 was considered a powerful and quick firing rifle in its day. President Teddy Roosevelt was rather impressed with it.
He acquired an 1894 similar to all his other rifles in extras and embellishments and used it on an antelope hunt. His "little .30" as he called it, was able to knock down a good sized antelope at a distance of more than 180 yds. After witnessing the fantastic shot and the irrefutable and immediate results, his guide said that the gun was just "aces" in his book.
Ballistics of the .30-30 are very similar to the Soviet 7.62x39 fired in the SKS and the AK-47
Oddly enough, there really is a shotgun variant of the Winchester 94. A .410 bore, IIRC. Tough to tell tell the difference from the rifle versions visually - possibly a bead front sight might be the difference.
You are correct—even the last batch of Model 94s built a few years ago had some in .410 bore.

Yea, that always works!
I am uncertain as to where OttOwa is, but I Do know that the Capital City of Canada is OttAwa. Since our countries are “so small and close together”, could you kindly inform your neighbours of the correct spelling of our Capital city?
We seldom misspell OARshingtunn.
When you practice head shots, body armour is irrelevant...
Also, shooting the meaty bit of the upper leg is pretty effective. Aim for the inner thigh.
I was going to say a hi point 9mm carbine is probably a better killer at short range than a 223.
I have a Rossi lever-action carbine in .357 (and the substitute 38 special). Decent rifle but nothing special - got it so I wouldn't have to add another type ammo to my list as I already had a .357 revolver.
Sadly there are too many variations to commit mayhem from said H-Bar to a couple of gallons of gas and a lighter. Expecting a Beslan or a Mumbai with “zero’s” policies.
You’d be rather wrong.
Any556/223 bullet at close range is going to be rather messy (that is the point of its existence)as it (FMJ or soft) will fragment. While any pistol bullet will be much less so. Dead, however, is dead.
It happened in Ottawa.
Those gun control laws really work well, don’t they?
I have been reading Colin Greenwood’s study of armed crime and firearms control in England and Wales, written in 1972.
He was the first to actually study the issue in any depth.
It was never about crime or safety, though those words were used as excuses.
It has always been about irrational phobias and politicians fears of an armed population.
Sorry about that, sometimes it’s tough being the big dumb neighbor.
I’m more interested in the gun that took down this ahem person and how many shots and where since I heard he was wearing armor of some sort.
I thought I was going to lose my cool if I saw 'Lybia' written one more time on this forum.
