Madrid health authorities have put down Ebola patient Teresa Romero Ramos' dog, Excalibur, despite protests. The animal was sedated prior to euthanasia to avoid its suffering, the Health Ministry of Madrid said in a statement.
More than 330,000 people had signed a petition on Change.org to save Excalibur. Ramos, a nurse's assistant, is in isolation after testing positive for the deadly Ebola virus earlier this week. Health authorities worried her dog may have also become infected.
Which warrants the questions: Can dogs really get Ebola and spread it to humans? What about other animals?
In Africa, Ebola infection "has been documented through the handling of infected chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelope and porcupines," WHO says, though researchers think fruit bats are what they call the virus' "natural host."(continued)

the dirty little secret in the shelter communmity is the no-kills simply’stop accepting animals when they are full. the shelters that put down b/c they have too many, are the ones those animals the no-kills reject, wind up going to, often because their charters do not allow them to reject animals becuase they’re full.
so the no-kills get to maintain this image but know the animals they turn down will go to a shelter that can’t refuse them based ‘on space, and they may wind up euthanizing some to make room for newer arrivals.
i know this firsthand. the no-kills let other places’do the dirtywork for them.
Bushmeat is probably the biggest reason for the Ebola epidemic in humans from what I’ve read over the last few years.
Muslims everywhere will rejoice at this turn of events.
As a dear FReeper friend has reminded me, there has never been a single, verifiable case of Ebola being transmitted by a dog.

well to be’clear id didn’t say i didn’t value animals’over’throat cutting savages. i just’said i wasn’t trying to say animals and people are equal. value and equal are not identical terms. things can be unequal and i can still value a lesser thing more. my horse isn’t a jihadi joe, but because’he-s’my horse he’s a heck of a lot more valuable to me than that terrorist will ever be.

I made a post noting that humans and dogs are not equal - the loss of a human is immeasurably more sad than the loss of a dog.
Secret Agent Man then posts three paragraph diatribe excoriating that position. But, (he insists) he isn't saying that position is wrong.
How does that work?
I did write of the exception I had. I said “Except, I value animals more”.
They should have sent her dog to America.

This shelter also conducts a New Years Eve “raid” of the local kill shelters whereby this shelter rescues as many critters scheduled for euthanasia as they can.
at least the dog didn’t have to endure a visit from Jesse Jackson.
Doggone.
I hope they learn from this nurse what went wrong. I still think they are underestimating this disease.
But I am happy that no more cases have been reported in Texas. If Duncan was contagious from the 24th to the 26th when he was hospitalized, we are now 12 days past that. Too early to sound the all clear, but since Duncan developed symptoms on what’s thought to be the 9th day since he was exposed, the odds are good we won’t see any additional cases. Of course Duncan could have been exposed before helping the pregnant lady, which would mean it took longer than 9 days for him to develop symptoms.

Dang it, they just rushed a second person to the hospital with symptoms of Ebola who had contact with Duncan.
The CDC disagrees with your mere rumor assessment.

What is sad it that people care more about their pets than they do people.
There is nothing in that report from 2005 stating that a person has ever caught Ebola from a dog. Porcupines, bats, antelope, monkeys, yes. Dogs? No.
If you believe that there is, and it appears as if you do, please copy and paste the relevant text out of the PDF and into your reply.

It’s not in there, the report says as much.
Now, I know that you would like for that to be insignificant until they actually get a volunteer and carry that out under laboratory conditions, but it isn't.
So, no - lack of experiments on humans does not reduce the risk factor to that of a rumor.
I guess that you could volunteer to be tested on with an infected dog, just so the issue would be settled in your mind. That would be an awful thing to do to your family though, as there really isn't much medical doubt.
Good thing there’s not any bats in Dallas.
