Muslim Offended By The Word Bacon

A breakfast restaurant in Vermont helped plant flower beds in city traffic medians. For their efforts the city of Winooski allowed Sneakers Bistro a sign on a lamp post. The sign read “yield for Sneakers bacon.” This apparently caused one Muslim great offense. You see, Muslims don’t eat pork. The Muslim complained loudly online and the city and Sneakers Bistro relented, removing the bacon sign while loudly proclaiming they don’t get involved in politics. Who knew bacon was a political issue?

The mayor of Winooski, Kathrine Decarreau, believes the “cool part of living in a diverse community is that it’s not always comfortable.” Apparently that means that one person offended by the word bacon is allowed to make everyone else uncomfortable by forcing its removal from public view. We’re not talking about a strip tease or vulgar language, we’re talking about the word bacon. Are there a list of words that might cause Muslims, or others, such discomfort that they may never be uttered or written in public?

So fearful is the left of offending Muslims they’re willing to remove something as inoffensive as the word bacon from a sign. They pretend like they’re not engaging in politics when they remove the word but they most certainly are. They’re caving to imagined offense, bending over backwards for one person who is absurdly offended by the word bacon. No one is forcing this Muslim to eat or touch bacon, we’re talking about nothing more than a word on a sign.

If the word bacon is removed for the sake of Islam, what other words will leftists remove in order to feign uninvolvement in politics? Lobster, Jesus Christ, pulled pork, the list can go on and on. Interestingly, Jews keep the same or similar dietary restrictions. Jews have lived in this country since its founding (unlike Muslims) and we’ve never seen them demand words like bacon be removed from public view. It’s only Muslims, in this case one single Muslim woman. It doesn’t even matter that the sign is on public property, in America food ought to be treated as so inoffensive that no one can demand food terms be removed from public space.

Why is the left so afraid of offending Muslims? Do they fear this single Muslim woman will bomb this restaurant because they refuse to remove bacon from a public sign? Is the city afraid she will bomb city hall if they don’t remove the sign? The mayor believes diversity is great because it can cause some discomfort. Why is it that the majority must always be irritated or annoyed because a Muslim finds something as ridiculous as the word bacon offensive? As a society we have become so concerned about the offensive of an extreme minority that we fail to grasp how absurd the offense is. If one person can cry offense and force change over the word bacon, what words can’t people cry offensive over in order to push others around? It seems we’re headed to the point where no speech will be tolerated, lest someone be offended.
