" Toobin said police are trained to “never fire a warning shot” and to “never fire a shot to injure.” He explained that if police fire their guns, they must “accept the risk” that they are “gonna kill somebody.” Adding that: “If you are not prepared to kill someone, don’t fire the gun.”

The rationale behind this, according to Toobin, is that if law enforcement is taught to fire warning shots or to shoot to injure instead of kill, people will be shot “too often.”

Uh, hello? Cops – like all civilians – shoot to stop a lethal threat. NOT KILL. Click here for Mike McDaniel’s most excellent article on the importance of that concept. Jeez."

One of the first rules of handling a weapon is the know where the bullet is going and what is behind it.

Firing warning shots into the air, land somewhere. Perhaps in a baby carriage. Perhaps in a nursing home.

And if you KNOW the cops fire warning shots, it gives the perp time and opportunity to close the physical gap.

I do not know exactly what happened in Ferguson. But, it appears that the police officer fired until the danger he perceived to be coming at him was abated.

CNN Wolf Blitzer: Why Don’t Cops “Shoot to Wound?”

_____________________________________

I read this headline and I agreed with it. With respect to cops shooting to wound the rioters and looters in Ferguson... Why not? Go for it.

Then I realized Blitzoid was talking about shooting to wound Mike Brown. Which is a stupid idea.

An idiot.

If a 300 pound man is bearing down on you like Michael Brown, one thinks first of one’s own safety.

Everything else is secondary.

If wounding is priority, why carry a gun. Throw stickballs at them.

Wolf would never make a cop.

Why can’t they shoot a warning shot in the air, scare someone off if they think they’re in danger.

That requires an assumption and a prediction. They have to assume that the attacker is not irrationally out of control, and that the chances are high that the warning shot will actually work. All of that deliberation takes time which is not available in an emergency situation.

Why Don’t Cops “Shoot to Wound?”
+++++++
The same reason that the people on “The Walking Dead” don’t.

Why Don’t Cops “Shoot to Wound?”

They do. Sometimes perps die anyway. :-)

Is Wolf REALLY that stupid? Looks to me like the man who assaulted Officer Wilson WAS wounded. Apparently the perp was not stopped by that wounding.

Officer Wilson had already been attacked by the perp, so probably feared for his life.

So the perp died.

Shoot to wound where?

What are the chances of hitting an artery and bleeding out if hit in the leg or arm?

And a gut shot is just a slow death sentence.

There really aren't any guaranteed "wound" spots, are there?

Um...Wolf....where do you suggest someone be shot to wound them?

Real life is not Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Autry and the Lone Ranger shooting the guns out of the bad guys' hands.

And it is not even Dirty Harry shooting a perp and asking is he feels lucky.

I hereby invite Mr. Blitzer to visit the pistol range with me on a date of his choosing. I will supply the weapons and ammunition. He can provide the expertise on how to do that in a kinetic situation.

The Ferguson officer shot the 6.4 290lb ADULT four times in the arm but the wounding
didn't effect him, he kept charging the officer.

Cut, check the script, take two.
