Robin Williams didn’t die from a disease, he died from his choice

I’m not normally one to write a blog post about a dead celebrity, but then I suppose there is no such thing.

There are only living celebrities, not dead ones. In death, wealth and prestige decay and we are brought into a new reality, the only reality there is or ever was — one which, for much better or much worse, doesn’t care at all about our popularity or our money.

The death of Robin Williams is significant not because he was famous, but because he was human, and not just because he left this world, but particularly because he apparently chose to leave it.

Suicide.

If I knew one. My propensity for the smart-elect is widely known. I prefer vanilla shakes with whipped cream, no cherry.

Love of God overcomes any heart disease.
Love of God overcomes any stroke.
Love of God overcomes any cancer.
Love of God overcomes any Parkinson’s disease.
Love of God overcomes any multiple sclerosis.

Doesn’t make much sense claiming the love of God overcomes any of these medical issues, does it? Neither does claiming the love of God can overcome depression. It might help a bit for some, but depression, especially the severe, suicidal type, needs serious medical intervention, like any other serious disease.

Probably a combination of things, not just one single thing.

1. The mental illness
2. The bleak outlook on life that comes part and parcel with being a liberal and most likely an atheist.
3. Fading career
4. Money problems

Add those up, and it can be a lethal combination.

Thanks. I can tell you after many fits and starts when I made the decision to quit living in a bottle it wasn't met with any credence. But it wasn't anyone else’s problem or fault other than my own. Depression, the most common form of mental illness, unfortunately still suffers a stigma that a person is ‘’crazy’’(a bad person, morally) and it's this, more than anything else that often prevents people from seeking treatment.

The guy suffered from severe depression, i.e. he wasn’t thinking rationally.

You can spout all of that Suicide is selfish, etc., all you want but the fact remains that a severe form of depression makes things look totally different for that person rather than someone functioning normally.

I suffered terrible depression after my Mother died many years ago and contemplated the unthinkable. I dealt with it and got over it.

But there are people who suffer such overwhelming despair that nothing seems to help and someone like Robin Williams could not cope for reasons we can’t fathom.

So I am afraid your advice is not a one size fits all cure.

I’m not trying to be argumentative, but if these people have no choice, then how is it that doctors and psychotherapists are often recommended to help them? And when they try to help them how is it even conceivable that they can be helped if they have no choice and the behavior they’re pursuing is inexorable and without choice? If they have no choice, well that is depressing, isn’t it? If they believe that, they’re bound to feel there is no hope. Without hope, as Eric Fromm’s book MAN’S SEARCH FOR MEANING points out, people just die. He noted that in Hitler’s prison camps those without hope died very quickly regardless of their physical condition while those with hope often lived inexplicably longer.

The secret to humor is timing. As it is in art, acting, music and dance. Your timing sucks.

I somewhat recently attended the funeral of a friend of mine whose husband committed suicide. She was pregnant. I was very glad to hear that the homily was NOT a bunch of nice platitudes merely to comfort HIS family, but included a stark, vivid commentary on how gravely sinful his decision was, and how he had so badly wronged this young woman and their child.

He was blunt when he called it gravely sinful, and offered no opportunity for repentance. He reminded everyone that those who die in mortal sin are not saved. Yet Christians of good conscience could still pray for his soul, because we do not know for sure he is in Hell. the gravity of a sin is not the only characteristic of mortal sin; it must be also be an expression of one’s free will. The young man had sought out help, had sinned and sought redemption. “We must not brush aside the cruelty and sinfulness of his act; we must also not judge his soul, for none of us knows what the state of his mind was when he died. As hurt as we are — and many among us are deeply hurt, a few beyond measure — we must also offer forgiveness.”

Depression is a real mental illness. Saying “Christ is the cure for any mental disorder” is as naive as saying “Christ is the cure for any disease.” Christians die of cancer. And they get depression. And people who judge them as being bad Christians because they get depression only slander the name of Christianity. Robin Williams made a terrible decision. But it was a decision made under temptations you’ve never felt. Judge his action: it was terribly evil. Do not judge the man.

The Nazis stated that often during their time in power.

Firstly, “Jesus doesn’t allow ignorant morons into Heaven” and by what means do YOU happen to know this? Secondly, what’s that about throwing the first stone?

In spite of all the “holier than thou” gang jumping on NKP, Robin William’s depression was the result of his bad life choices. He was a long time coke head by his own choice. He was having financial trouble, again by his own choice of the path he decided to travel.

Suicide is the most selfish act any person can do. Yes there are some who are not self induced depressed who commit suicide, but I dare say that most are depressed like Williams, self induced. For self induced depression suicide I have no sympathy and Robin Williams deserves none. The pity should be for his poor family and for those who tried to help him.

we do not know for sure he is in Hell.

Yeah, sometimes it's hard for us to tell for sure.

Depressive is a mental disorder not a disease. Liberal shrinks turned it into a “disease” years ago. They have to make a living.

As a mother and “battle buddy” to my 22 year old son who suffers from high functioning autism, major depression, and anxiety, I take issue with your attitude toward mental illness and “not being right with God”. It’s such attitudes that drive people to have no hope and give up and kill themselves. The stigma associated with mental illness is just as bad as the disease itself. Tell me, is a child with a down syndrome or cancer also “not right with God”? It is your same type of attitude that has driven countless parents of children with mental illness out of churches to be left on their own to worship God in their own way. Mental illness is a very real disease and it’s time society put as much thought and action in to helping those who suffer from it as they do the gossip and national headlines when it’s a celebrity suicide or mass shooting.

“This ought a be an interesting thread.”

You were right, as I knew you would be. An opportunity for everyone’s 2 cents on suicide, addiction, depression, divine intervention, etc. Some are well-thought, some visceral, but each needs the other.

The only kinds of threads that outlive these are “What kind of handgun should I buy?”.

It’s what makes FR, well, FR!

Still he chose to end his life and bring great pain to those who loved him....regardless of what problems he faced...he’d been in those positions more than once throughout his lifetime. He knew by those experiences what to expect....so he simply quit the race.

All Righty Then.

You and NKP_Vet are convinced that any Christian who kills themself is burning in Hell.

What else? Are you glad about that? Selfish bastards deserve to be roasting for all eternity?

Many of the doomed before the gas chambers at Auschwitz took their own lives. Were they’’selfish’’? Were those trapped in The North Tower on 9/11 and who jumped to their deaths rather than be burned alive ‘’selfish’’?
