I have a co-worker I've known for many years (10), and all this time, from how spoke out against abortion, homosexuality & gay marriage, common sense, drugs, and so many other progressive ideals, that I assumed she was a Republican, until today.
We got onto the topic of class warfare and poverty. Well.. I was stunned to find that she supported the Democrats wholly on this, that was the only reason she did, that the fact they supported everything else she stood against, didn't matter. Republicans, Conservatives, and especially the Tea Party were liars and were rich and hated the poor, and they should completely support welfare programs, and they weren't "paying their fair share."
To say the least, I lit into her and was aghast at her stance. I guess I could have been a little more "velvet glove" about it, but it just got me angry, as I've seen this in other Catholics who support the welfare system (they must do EVERYTHING they can to fight the war on poverty), and America just wasn't throwing enough money down the rat hole.
Just what percentage of Catholics are like this? This is aggravating, when they SHOULD be the more conservative among us. I know there are lot of good Catholics here, but what have you guys encountered?
Genetic memories? That’s ridiculous. That condescending attitude does nothing to induce people to vote conservative.
Water to wine to kool aid.
I’m not sure what you mean. Did I say something inaccurate?
Same reason many Cardinals elected a religiously indifferent, socialist to the papal office; ignorance of the Catholic faith.
The black vote was normal in 1932, with FDR getting his democrat 23% from blacks, but then in 1936 they went 71% for FDR, and never looked at republicans again.
I don’t know why, it does put the lie to all these claims of why liberal groups vote liberal though, because as we can see, a group can change historical voting patterns on a dime.
We can all guess it had something to do with FDR’s welfare, but it calls for a much more elaborate explanation than that.
That was my first reaction as well. Why always the Catholics?
I’m Methodist and I have no use for Catholic bashing. My own sect has plenty of problems of its own to solve.
You lit into her, but did it do one iota of good????
As a recent convert, I’d like to note that I'm happy you specified some. I may at some point go independent from Republican, but I’d sooner set myself on fire than vote Democrat. In other words, that’s not happening.
Why are some rich people communists? Why do Blacks vote for the party of enslavement? Why do birds suddenly appear.............
If you could solve this dilemma, republicans would win the hispanic vote and all of the city dem voters. Why do blacks vote for dems and the death cultists on tuesday then worship God on sunday. i think it is a cultural problem that will never be solved.
*Because they are fakes*
She’s not fake. She was very upset and irrate when her grandson’s girlfriend had an abortion. I mean, spittle was flying when she was venting about this, and I commiserated with her, and offered my condolences on losing a great- grandchild.
We also discussed at length at how destructive gay marriage was to traditional marriage. She called it an abomination!
And yet... here she is calling conservatives and Tea Party liars and extremists-—there is a serious DISCONNECT here! I am boggled and growing angrier thinking about it. After all this time of us having these discussions that sounded pro-life, common sense, and conservative.
I feel rather betrayed.
Why do majority Catholic nations like Italy vote in pro abortion governments?
These people are the nominals. They are religious for cultural reasons. Other than that, they don’t give a hoot.
I think it has a lot more to do with rural vs urban than anything.
I can see that.
Protestant Hispanics did go 44% GOP in 2000, 56% GOP in 2004, 48% GOP in 2008, and I’m not aware of actual voting numbers for 2012, but they seem to be out of the predictable mode for Hispanics, and reachable.
What you are seeing is a cultural Catholic and a cultural Democrat, and with some people, it goes back to their ancestors’ immigrant experience with the Know-nothings in Boston. “No Irish need apply” signs, and “Romanism and Rebellion”. All these rose up with an anit-Catholic immigrant attitude which was part of the northeastern GOP establishment in the past half of the the 19th century.
For some of these low information voters (and that is what they are), being a Catholic and being a Democrat is the same thing. It is because they have been frankly lazy in not becoming aware of the issues of the day and how each party is endorsing the various issues. They just drift along and when the election comes, & they ignorantly go and vote the same way their grandparents voted 60 years ago.
So it definitely is an ignorance factor here.
Some = more than half lately.
all i know is that they had wealthy people all over when jesus was alive and He never said go and take whatever you want from the rich, they can afford it and it’s their duty to let you take it.
He did say we’d always have the poor with us. poor is a relative measure and you can be poor in other ways than material.
