There are plenty of solid red counties here, they’re just not as populated as the deep blue counties, therefore receive little voice when the state is taken as a whole. Optimisitically this would give voice to the red counties, and in effect would remove one blue state from the union, replacing it with 3 blue, 2 red and a purple (Sens. -2 D, +7 D/+5 R, or a slight % edge to R for the whole of the Senate.) That being said, I don’t necessarily have a favorable opinion of this move, six parts may be too many and like you, I have to wonder about the politics, the motive, of the people behind this push.

Hasn’t this proposal popped up in the past?

Only with a sub-divide into 3 states.

Lower CA, split just above LA

Central CA, up to Sacramento

Northern CA Sacramento up to OR

I seem to remember none of the northern two wanted the San Fran wierdos..:^)

Yes, it is possible that some of the new ‘states’ could be conservative. However, with a Democrat controlled state government, I have a feeling that the drawing of these new states would be very circuitous, taking maximum advantage of demographics.

However, I don’t think it’s going to happen - even get close to it. It’s just another dream like DC becoming a state. They (Democrats) just don’t have the numbers throughout the rest of the states to assure statehood.

Lastly, and most importantly, I think the last thing any producing American wants is another 5 states with 10 more Senators added to the 100 fools we have now (at least 90% of them, anyway).
