It seems the patriotism and unity the nation experienced in the aftermath of 9/11 has waned—and quite considerably, according to a recent Pew poll.
Fox News has the details:
[A]n exhaustive new Pew poll shows that actual patriotism is in the dumps. An amazing 44 percent of all respondents said they didn’t often feel proud to be American. Only 28 percent said that America was the greatest nation on earth. Not surprisingly, there’s a strong split on a partisan level, with Democrats more likely to say they are less proud to be an American.
Pew divided their sample into different categories across the left-right political spectrum. When asked if respondents “often feel proud to be American,” a majority of strong liberals, 60 percent, said no. The only group that solidly agreed with the statement was conservatives, ranging from 72 percent to 81 percent. About half of the respondents in the middle of the spectrum – essentially libertarians to socially conservative fiscal liberals – said they were proud to be American. This isn’t just another eye-opening poll, however. What Pew has found is critically important for the direction of this country. As Fox News’ Chris Stirewalt asks: “how do you unite people to save the country if they’re not invested in its success?”

I was in Mongolia a few years after the demise of the soviet union. I always have an icebreaker when meeting with a group and my questions was, “What are you most proud of?” Each and Every one of them was intensely proud of their country and heritage. I remember thinking by answer would not be the USA and current culture.
Remember that the soviet union repressed their history and culture for political correctness for over 70 years. Once removed, they rediscovered their heritage, every new business was name Genghis Kahn. It was like the wild west there, there were no rules, it was just get it done.
It gave me hope, we will rediscover our heritage when the time is right.

The America I grew up in in the 80s, and even the America in the months after 9/11 were the ones that I’ve always thought of when I think about what being an American was all about.
This America today? Nope. It’s flat-out embarrassing.

As I interpret that: “how do you unite people to be proud of the country that is becoming deranged as a result of the occupation by aged 1960s Marxist-Alinsky campus radical, psycho spoiled brats and their ideological litters?”
It's like asking townspeople and students to be proud of the local university occupied and virtually shutdown by campus radical, psycho spoiled brats.

People don’t even know what America is, or how unique it is, and Michele speaks for them.
I see very few in my area as well.
I live in a conservative neighborhood and several of us fly our flags. Unlike some areas, no one here has complained.
I’m proud of the America in which I grew up.. it was (for the most part) the America the wanted to be at the top of the world, Reagan’s “shining city on a hill.”
As for today’s America.. the one that elected that destructive, satanic POS twice? It’s a challenge to gin up much pride in it these days. The country as a whole barely values its own existence.
Forty-Four Percent are not Americans so they have nothing to be proud of losers the lot of them.
Have you seen the worthlessness of our dollar compared to the Euro? Only the wealthy can afford to leave this sinking ship. And they are, by a whopping 700% increase. The Chinese and other foreigners are buying up the best real estate in the West. How can we be a country without any borders? Our men and women are expected to sacrifice life and limb to be given the pink slip in the battlefield so that Muslims can fill the ranks. Medical staff from the VA are being diverted to give aid to the illegals. Common Core is nothing more that a vile way to discourage our children from learning or even thinking they are capable of learning. We are becoming more balkanized by the day. Churches are being infiltrated and paid off with tax dollars to further the leftist agenda. And on and on and on. Lord help us. We were a once proud nation and it has come this this?
