A 17-year-old boy has been sentenced to 23 years behind bars for fatally shooting a retired police dog during a burglary. Ivins Rosier was convicted in May for breaking into the Florida home of a trooper and shooting the officer's five-year-old German Shepherd two years ago. Drake, a former drug-sniffing dog, was euthanized five days later. Rosier, who was 16 at the time of the incident but tried as an adult, was sentenced on Friday on charges of animal cruelty, armed burglary and shooting into an occupied building.Palm Beach Post reported Circuit Judge Robin Rosenberg said she handed Rosier a tough sentence as she was bound by sentencing guidelines. According to police, Rosier was one of three teens who broke into Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Robert Boody's home on November 18, 2012. Rosier, who had a history of run-ins with the police, is the first to be tried, according to Palm Beach Post. Sun Sentinel reported that Rosier confessed to police he was the one who shot the dog. During the two-day trial, patrol officer Boody cried as he told the court about returning home from work to find Drake, who he adopted in 2010, wounded. Drake suffered broken limbs, bullet wounds in his head and jaw, massive blood loss and lethal damage to his esophagus.

Whether you're a cop or criminal, if you trespass onto someone's property/break into someone's home and shoot their dog you are scum and deserve the maximum punishment available.

Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Robert Boody's emotional reactions and his efforts to save the life of his dog reveal the emotional damage, the pain and suffering, caused and the punishment should be its equal and severe enough to be a deterrent.

Moreover, if a homeowner kills the person who shot or is threatening to shoot his/her dog, that homeowner is NOT guilty of a crime, but has instead done society a favor.

May God then forgive the homeowner and ease his/her pain.

Just based on what’s excerpted here it seems the sentence is for all the crimes, burglary, etc.,not just shooting the dog.

I doubt any animal cruelty laws carry penalties like that.

You don’t get 23 years for animal cruelty. You get 23 years for using a firearm committing a crime...

Headline is very misleading....

“It sounds like some on here aren’t aware that K-9s are the same as human cops - even those retired. So, in essence, this little criminal shot and maimed a police officer. That’s probably why he got the book thrown at him. Plus, the route he’s taking - he’ll just be in and out of the system the rest of his life anyway.”

That’s the problem. Put the magic badge on a dog, and all of a sudden his life is worth more than a citizen. That’s BS. He is a DOG, not a person. And let the cop accidentally kill the dog by leaving him in the hot car, and all of a sudden he becomes just a dog again.

A cop’s life is no more valuable than anyone else. And his dog is still just a damn dog.

This here is just an example of a cop being treated as more equal than others. An offense against a cop is treated like treason. an offense BY a cop is treated as nothing.
Look at SWAT raids. A confused citizen shoots at or even kills a cop, there is no understanding for the confusion.
Let the cop make a mistake and harm an innocent, and we’re supposed to give him every understanding of his confusion.

“Plus, the route he’s taking - he’ll just be in and out of the system the rest of his life anyway.”

That is just you making the assumption you want to meet your view. And it has no baring on his actions HERE. That is all we can punish. You can’t punish someone for actions they MAY choose.

If cops shoot your dog, though, it is okay

“How many years in prison do you get if you kill a gay Muslim police dog ?”

Was the Dear Departed a gay dog belonging to a Muslim cop?

Or was it a police dog assigned to a gay Muslim cop?

What the heck do you mean, you can’t punish someone for the actions they MAY choose? Of course, we can and do. Seems like this guy is getting punished for the actions he CHOSE! Your rant is just too weird - and kind of wrong - so I’ll leaveit at that.

That went through the judicial process and the civil cases never went anywhere.

LOL! Doug Gillespie's "justice". How many of his guys have gotten gigged for killing peasants? Zero, wasn't it? Sounds like ol' Doug's gonna lower the boom on peasant Bundy and his peasant defenders, though...

It’s too bad the deceased was carrying while under the influence of drugs.

Yeah, that's right - execute the peasant, then smear him. Too bad the cameras weren't working that day - kind of like IRS backup servers...

I imagine that the trigger-happy Brown Barrage Balloons would have tested positive for steroids, and donut grease...

Uhhhh - no. Police dogs, active or retired, are not "magic". You seem to be contending that they are, and LevinFan rightly begged to differ. So, he's not wrong.

And people wonder how the German people were led down the primrose path after the Weimar Republic...

i wish the cops’ responses were like this for all the dog owners who’ve lost a dog doing nothing, shot by cops.

not for dogs actually attacking, but these are far and few between today.
