Pizza driver beaten with baseball bat during delivery, police say (New Orleans knockout game)

A pizza-delivery driver was beaten by a man with a baseball bat early Tuesday morning in the former B.W. Cooper housing projects, New Orleans Police said.

The driver was taking a delivery to the 1300 block of South Prieur Street shortly before 2 a.m., and saw a man waiting outside when he arrived, said NOPD Detective Sgt. David Barnes on Tuesday afternoon at the weekly meeting of Sixth District ranking officers. The driver asked the man if he was the person who placed the order, and when the man said yes, the driver turned back to the car to get the pizza, Barnes said.

At that point, the driver was attacked from behind with a baseball bat, Barnes said. He was struck several times in the head and body, and the suspects then left without taking anything or saying anything, Barnes said.

“It could be a pizza man version of ‘the knockout game,’ as best I can tell,” Barnes said.

Robberies of pizza drivers are not uncommon, noted Sgt. Daniel Scanlan, but no motive was clear for the beating.

“It’s unknown why they would order a pizza and just whack the guy with a baseball bat,” Scanlan said.

The driver had to have several staples in his head after the attack and is now recovering at his home, said Mark Murret, a safety director for the Domino’s franchise. The driver tried to give the assailants the pizza, Murret said, but they seemed to ignore it as they attacked him.

“He said, ‘Here, take the pizza,’” Murret said. “But they just kept beating him.”

Domino’s restricts the amount of cash that drivers carry to make them less of a target, Murret said. The store’s phones have caller ID, and drivers call back the numbers they receive orders from to confirm that the order is legitimate, Murret said. Finally, if they feel unsafe at any time, they are authorized to return to the store.

“Pizza delivery is a vulnerable occupation,” Murret said. “You’re vulneable, just like anyone else who deals with the public.”

Domino’s will stop delivery to the immediate area around the site of the attack for now, Murret said, but will re-evaluate if an arrest is made in the case.

“Due to the violent nature of the incident, we won’t be delivering to the area for the time being,” Murret said.

The driver has been with Domino’s for two years, and workman’s compensation will help him with his medical expenses and the work that he misses, Murret said. Domino’s also has an internal foundation to help employees when an emergency strikes and keeps them from their jobs, he said.

If he was attacked by someone with a bat, it is NOT a game. It is assault with intent to do bodily harm or possibly premeditation.

If police departments don’t nip this dangerous fad, it will escalate. Perps think they can commit the assaults and get, at most, a slap on the wrist.

All companies should shut off service to the area until the flush out the POS.

If the POS is captured, he should be beaten within a inch of losing his life with a baseball bat. My guess is he wouldn’t ever do it again. That’s the kind of justice that would handle such wild animals.

One has to be very tough, very crazy or very desperate to deliver pizzas in that neighborhood.

“The driver asked the man if he was the person who placed the order, and when the man said yes, the driver turned back to the car to get the pizza...At that point, the driver was attacked from behind with a baseball bat”

It’s easy to play armchair general (i.e. “well, I would have done such and such”), and I’m certainly not going to blame the victim for the actions of the thugs who beat him. That said, this case *is* a stark reminder of just how important situational awareness is.

“Domino’s will stop delivery to the immediate area around the site of the attack for now...“Due to the violent nature of the incident, we won’t be delivering to the area for the time being,” Murret said.

Sadly, that’s likely to be challenged with a lawsuit sooner rather than later. Remember the stink about 10 years ago over pizza delivery places not delivering to bad neighborhoods?

Ideally, they get a bullet in the head.

This is a renovated “prettyfied” project. Still the same thug ridden pesthole it always was. The streets of New Orleans are killing fields. STAY AWAY if you value your life.

While a head shot is ideal(assuming you mean CNS shot, AKA brain shot), they are harder to reliably take. Starting low with a groin shot, followed by a center of mass, finishing with a head shot is a modified Mozambique drill with some advantages.

After a few occurrences, Urban Ferals will think about whether they really want to risk a falsetto voice and the delights of dumping in a bag. The Libtard Presstitutes will assure wide ranging publicity, so the Ferals will know.

See - there is a use for Presstitutes after all.

“Amish?”

A really stupid comment!

If you can’t call them the ‘N-word’, fine but do not call them Amish!

Domino’s employees sign a contract in which they agree not to carry a weapon, said a Domino’s corporate spokesman. It is a policy designed to protect both the public and employees. If robbers approach, drivers are told to “turn over the pizza and empty your pockets.”

Apparently there is a flaw in their little scheme.

However, those employees who ignore their contract and carry guns are far less likely to be seriously injured or killed; even though they will be fired for defending their lives, they are still alive and unharmed.

The one exception is that if their personnel are working a second job on top of being an LEO. Since they are required to be armed even off duty, Dominoes says that their defending themselves is in their capacity as an LEO, not as a Dominoes employee.

You're right. And Dominoes will lose. Some judge will rule that it's a "right" to get a pizza at 2 AM.
