TUCSON, Arizona Daniel Neyoy Ruiz spends his days and nights living behind a steel-barred door. Meals are brought to him; his young son comes to visit.
This 12 by 15 foot room isnt jail; its what it takes for Neyoy to be free in America. Facing deportation after a driving infraction, Neyoy found safe haven in a place hes called home his whole life: the church.
I never thought that this would happen, Neyoy said. I say this is better than being locked in (prison). Because there you are really locked. Here people can come visit you, they bring you food, we have all the comforts that you need.Every day that Congress stalls on immigration reform, thousands of undocumented immigrants are put under threat of deportation. Desperate to keep families together and to protect their flock, a growing number of religious leaders are putting themselves between individuals at risk and the authorities that want them removed. There is evidence that it is working. Immigration officials are holding back from seizing individuals under church protection.
Its up to the religious leaders to step into that gap and to bring a moral voice to whats going on, and try to remind our politicians that while youre playing politics in D.C., real families are being affected, said Rev. Alison Harrington, standing outside Neyoys converted bedroom.
The space, just big enough for a bunk bed, a mini-fridge and a few chairs, is slightly larger than the average American prison cell. It used to be Harringtons office.

Carlos wants to go to Disneyland with his dad. He wants him there for graduations and for when he accepts a hoped-for law degree one day...Doesn't want father deported because he wants him to go with him to Disneyland..and this ...Our congregation understands that this is part of what we do, said Leslie Carlson, a church member who volunteered during the original Sanctuary Movement. They feel very strongly that Arizonas response to the needs of immigrants that currently live here is morally wrong...The church does not think Neyoyhas a moral responsibility to not be out driving on our roads and highways without licenses/insurance.. The church in this matter does not think Neyoyhas moral responsibility,to not be using fraudulent documents for employment..Ignore many, many laws but whatever is to be done. All that matters is his family..I would like to see this church step up and agree to pay for all medical expenses for now and in the future replace the car that was hit by any unlicensed driver in AZ,and agree to offer settlement for the driver is illegally in country and illegally driving out on our roads and highways driving when it is clearly against the law for him to do so.. Wonder if this church would be open to paying one claim that resulted in family being the subject of an hit and run, driver. Would this same church offer to do everything within their powers to make it right ?
I want him and his son to be deported. NOW.
Keep illegal alien families together in their country of origin just like the law abiding families stay together.
Thank you for the link..that really sums up where we stand today and America shall continue to decline and as she said this is no longer America that she grew up in, is what we all are saying right now and we will be saying this over and over in the weeks, months, years to come..
I want them all deported... and the head of the church to be arrested. Churches should not have ILLEGALS hiding in them. Would they let bank robbers stay?
What Carlos hasn't learned in public school is: his parents broke not only immigration laws, but car emission laws. It's his parent's lack of respect for US laws that keep them separated.
Thats what the federal government is all about today.
I went and started reading the comments section in the MSNBC article. There is an amazing number of commentators who are angry at the movement to amnesty and at the illegal actions of so many of these immigrants. Either there are a whole lot of free-republic people tearing their comment lines up, or there are a lot more angry people in the country than I thought.
Alinsky tactics aren’t restricted to politicians.
Leftist media outlets have been using them for years with these personalized, polarized sob stories.
‘Jose worries about his son’s health and education...’
‘Judy Brown couldn’t believe it when her medical insurance was cancelled...’
‘Raheem Jackson is an African American Studies grad who can’t find a job...’
etc. etc.
One person’s struggles are a story but they are not a trend.
I’m sure MSNBC will overlook the conspiracy of lawlessness and secrecy that is filling up military (!) bases with wetbacks.
<>Safe haven keeps immigrant families together<>
The Beast keeps them together too:

It’s also a fun ride, better than anything at Disneyland, an E ticket for sure —
Perhaps Border Patrol should make their dreams come true with a return ride back south on The Beast.
They are Democrat-sponsored illegal aliens.
POOR POOR BABY!!! American immigration laws are keeping your family apart? No numbnutz. You illegally entering the country with your children is what separated your family.
That reads like real journalism.. how the hell did that slip by the skid marks on Journalism's shorts at MSNBC! The majority caught at the border, turned around and sent back is what Obama lied is "deportations;" of the real deportations 82% had criminal records.
Why are those advocating for ILLEGAL immigrants doing nothing to help them except for trying to get taxpayers to do it or organizations like churches to do it? Where are the Dems, Pubs, chambers of commerce offering homes, cars, money, scholarships to the victims?
Yeah, these will be some IDEAL citizens.
And I'm fairly certain someone raised in the 80s is having a hard time, as well.
Hang on to your lugnuts, transformation is proceeding at warp speed.
This line summarizes perfectly the laziness and cowardice of those of us in the center-right. We're always waiting for someone else to do the work for us, so we can go about our daily lives without that pesky duty to govern ourselves.
I believe there's still time to do something about it that doesn't involve invoking the Second Amendment, but too many here are either spoiling for a fight, or so cowardly they're ready to surrender right now.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
He could probably go outside of his self styled church prison and do a naked chicken dance and not get removed from the country. Such drama.
