Liberal MSNBC host Chris Matthews continued his attacks on the Obama administration for the trade of five dangerous Taliban prisoners for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, slamming the White House’s claim that soldiers who served with Bergdahl are “swift-boating” him and asking “where is the dishonesty in the portrayal?” of Bergdahl as a deserter.
Matthews, who strongly questioned the trade even while facts continued to pour in on Monday, has been the only host on his network so far to even remotely challenge the Obama administration’s narrative on the prisoner trade and Bergdahl’s history of service.
And on Wednesday, he angrily rejected the characterization by Obama aides that the right-wing and Bergdahl’s former comrades were “swift-boating” the Army Sgt. — a reference to attacks made by then-presidential candidate John Kerry’s fellow servicemen on his record during his deployment in the Vietnam War.
“I’ve had a few [White House] aides . . . refer to this, they didn’t expect the ‘swift-boating’ of Bergdahl, trying to bring back memories of the whole political fight with John Kerry back in 2004,” NBC reporter Chuck Todd told Matthews.
“Wait a minute,” Matthews responded. “Wait a minute. Swift-boating is totally misused here. Swift-boating is when you make up stories and misconstrue the evidence — you don’t like the way John Kerry opposed the Vietnam War when he came back and turned it into an attack on his service over there. Totally dishonest.”
“These are questions raised about a guy who left post, wrote letters, sent signals that he was leaving post as a matter of principle, he didn’t believe in the war effort,” he continued angrily. “And we don’t know what’s worse here, but the idea — where’s the dishonesty in the portrayal of Bergdahl so far? I haven’t seen it.”
“What’s been misconstrued about him so far?” Matthews asked. “I know there have been questions raised. I have those questions. Most Americans do.”
“Chris, I understand,” a nervous Todd responded. “This is not my portrayal. I’m simply reporting to you how the White House is viewing this.”
Seems dumb to me too. Hillary's not running against Obama. I don't see how Hillary wins extra votes by going into 2016 with the incumbent president of her party bruised, battered and scandal-ridden. Seems more likely to turn off voters from the Dem party.
He’s providing cover for Her Thighness; nothing more. He’s shrewd enough, perceptive enough to realize just how bad Obama f’d up and he’s carving a path for Hillary to seek cover.
Swift-boating means telling the truth in the face of a barrage of lies.
Matthews and the white-hut turn the truth on its head. So is the liar lying, is the lying liar lying, or is the head-liar lying?

I think going against the soldiers currently fighting the war, to defend a traitor that no one is happy with or trusts, and using old political campaign language to attack soldiers in their 20s and fresh from the front, or still serving, is as stupid as it gets.

Except for GW Bush who admonished the Swift Boat Vets for the purpose of protecting the political class. In Bush’s mind, there is the political class and then there are the rest of us. And we don’t really matter except as fools to play with in the election cycle.
I came from being a 100% supporter and donor of GW Bush to being his biggest detractor here on FR because I saw that he would not stand up for the truth but opted instead for his daddy’s way which is to protect the political class at the cost of telling truth tellers to shut up.

well according to Chris Mathews the Vietnam soldiers were dishonest but the Afghan soldiers are not. Somehow Mathews knows these things :-)
Liberals are funny. Take NYC liberals. Since they had WTC attack and many knew personally the ones lost, they tend to go nuts when dealing with terrorist involved with the attack. However, all other terrorists are overlooked. Since our country is evenly divided, any parent that let their kids join the military is nuts. Why?!!! Military tactics is no longer made on military principles, but political ones. Carter pardon the draft dodgers, hate to be the parent of a child who was against the war in Vietnam, but went in order to obey the draft laws. Imagine the venom the mother spews on the husband after the loss of their son and followed by the pardon. Even GWB was not immune. Under fire for civilians killed in firefights, rules of engagements were imposed on our troops. Shoot three seconds too early and you are arrested, shoot three seconds too late and one of your buddies can get killed, and by the way you have two seconds to make the life altering decision. Now we trade five tough Taliban commanders for one US Army deserter who got 12 US soldiers killed when they tried looking for him??!!! The US can not engage in a long term war without the political opposition creating political hell, forcing the one in power to undermine the war effort in order to preserve PR and image CYA.
The only way this problem goes away is when the enemy attacks and invades the US homeland. At this point our political class will cut the political games on each other and demand our troops to use whatever means needed to win. In my opinion, God gave us two great ocean barriers, a continental size land in between rich in resources and no major hostile power on our borders. If we stay here, conduct commerce, have a strong military and not get entangled in other people’s affairs, the better we would be. If war comes to the US it is clear cut, because the US homeland has to be physically attacked. Fighting wars overseas to stop something hypothetical (Iraqi WMD, Domino Theory, etc etc etc) don’t seem to cut it due to political games played by our two parties during wars overseas. That is my 2 cents.

I recall in the 90s, Matthews did fill in occasionally for Rush Limbaugh.
