Recent research indicates there is growing concern about the dramatic rise in the number of syphilis victims among the gay men community in the United States. It has been reported that syphilis is spreading rapidly among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.

There's apparently a whole class of men out there who have sex with other men but don't self-identify as gay or bisexual. They think of "gay" as a cultural term (campy, trampy, flaming, mincing, sashaying, wearing "gay" fashions, hanging out at identified "gay" entertainment venues, etc.) To them it means effeminate or sissy. Or maybe to them it means the catcher but not the pitcher.

Or maybe they don't "regularly" have sex with men, but only opportunistically, under certain conditions (e.g. in prison.) Anyhow, the public health literature has taken to calling them "MSM" (men who have sex with men) --- rather than gay or bi.
