This all started over the govt taking land in 1993 that the Bundy family has had access to since the late 1870's in which their cattle graze. The land has been deemed a protected habitat for the desert turtle where Bundy's cattle can still graze as long as they pay the grazing tax. The family has refused to pay the tax which has ballooned according to the feds to $1.3 million, keep in mind to run this operation of armed govt agent stormtroopers and removing the cattle the cost will be over $3 million! Yea that's the govt for you proving they cannot run anything!
Anyone see a problem with this right off the bat? If the grazing zone is deemed a habitat for a turtle how does paying a tax all of a sudden make it safe for the desert turtle? Grazing cattle theoretically are "destroying" said habitat are they not? But the govt sees a rancher paying a grazing tax as a remedy but makes no effort to restore the "damaged" areas! Typical govt hypocrisy!
This is an incredibly dangerous slope we are on.
Take note one of the protestors screaming at the BLM rangers is making it clear who the aggressors are and it isn't the unarmed people! Throwing a woman to the ground, repeated tasering of unarmed protestors who are no threat to armed stormtroopers with attack dogs is asking for trouble! With the current high level of disapproval for govt coupled with the prevalence of the internet, social media, 24/7 new coverages this standoff is going to escalate extremely fast. Yea remember when Beck warned about it and everyone mocked him over it! Well it's coming to fruition now! Regardless of the true issue at hand whether one has broken the law or not people are so fed up they will come to another's aid to defend them. When this footage goes viral, and more like is to come, you can be sure the call to arms out already by citizen patriots is going to increase where the numbers will double if not triple. If a shot is fired by the feds be prepared for a conflict, the people of this nation are completely fed up with govt violations in every aspect of our lives and will not allow another Waco or Ruby Ridge.
The only advice I can give those rushing to support the Cliven Bundy and his family is be careful and have the law on your side. Do not keep the govt stormtroopers the edge, you have to be one step ahead of them. The Bureau of Land Management is ran by Neil Kornze. He is a man who has ties with Harry Reid, mining and solar power. He had the support of the League of Conservative Voters and the Defenders of Wildlife. This is the man who is tasked with managing millions of acres of government land and resources on these lands owned by the tax payers.

Kornze has also served as an international election observer in Macedonia, the Ukraine, and Georgia, and he is co-author of an article in “The Oxford Companion to American Law.”
Raised in Elko, Nevada, Kornze is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate with a degree in Politics from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. He earned a master’s degree in International Relations at the London School of Economics.
Someone who has no qualifications, other than political connections, seems to have put the Bureau of Land Management in a position to anger a lot of people, while they cattle rustle.

I totally agree with your post. People are fed up and looking for the “Lexington” moment to start this thing but this is not the right fight to pick. This guy was freeloading for 25 years. Got caught and now is raising a stink. I worry because as I said people are looking to fight back. We are sick and tied of government overreach and want a cause to support. This ain’t it IMO.
A lot of suppositions in Ms. Barnhardt’s assesment. Trying to make a claim he is the only one is specious at best. This is open range. I see the sign that the location is 9 miles from Mesquite. Have you or Ms. Barnhardt ever been to the area around Mesquite?

The land has belonged to the federal government since 1848, when it was acquired under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
From 1848 until passage of the Taylor Grazing Act of 1934, the federal government allowed free grazing on federal open range. The Taylor Grazing Act provided for grazing permits within the grazing districts established under the act. The permits required the payment of grazing fees.
The Taylor Grazing Act was subsequently pre-empted by the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976, which continued to provide for grazing fees.
The grazing contracts have a ten-year term.
Nevada open-range law specifically recognizes federal grazing contract provisions as Nevada law.
From 1934 to 1993, the Bundy family had a grazing contract with the federal government and paid the grazing fee.
In 1993, Clive Bundy refused to sign a new grazing agreement with the BLM because the new agreement limited the number of cattle on the allotment (due to the presence of an endangered species of tortoise) and increased the grazing fee.
Bundy has not paid the grazing fee required by both federal and state law since 1993.
Bundy has lost every court case regarding his claimed right to use the BLM property to graze his cattle. He was first ordered by a federal court to remove his cattle in 1998.
The BLM is removing his cattle as 'trespassing cattle' pursuant to a third federal court order.
As we've now come to expect, the federal government has over-reacted in its display of force.

The governor should call out the Nevada National Guard. Until the feds federalize those troops and send them home,, the governor any local sheriff should deputize every law-abiding citizen and tell them to arm themselves. Local and in state officials would outnumber the feds 10 to 1. The governor should then go down there on horseback and tell the federal government to get out of the state!
Its amazing how often endangered animals are found in commonly used areas and then once protected, they go extinct there.
I'm reminded of “naturalists” here in North Florida protesting that the Navy had to close a bombing range, because it had a very high concentration of tortoises. So with the range being heavily used for 50 years, how did the concentration get so high if the bombing was bad for the tortoises?

I’m curious about something, and you seem to be up to speed on these matters.
Where I grew up (Missouri), state law required landowners to maintain 50% of common fence lines. Although you were liable for your own livestock, you were not liable for damage if they crossed through the 50% of fence that wasn’t your responsibility, IF the condition of the fencing was deemed inadequate.
What are the rules out west? Do the Feds have any responsibility to fence their property or is it entirely on the owner of the livestock to restrict them?
