Leaders from the Evangelical Immigration Table and U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops joined in a letter to Congress asking for passage of a bill this year that fixes the immigration system.
"Common sense fixes to our immigration policies are long overdue. As a nation founded upon the principles of the rule of law and the centrality of family, we can no longer delay fixing this system," the letter states.
The leaders note that they encounter the difficulties caused by the nation's immigration system through interactions they have with people in their faith communities.
"As leaders in our respective faith communities, we live every day with the reality that our immigration system does not reflect our commitment to the values of human dignity, family unity and respect for the rule of law that define us as Americans. Each day we witness the human tragedies created by our current system, including the separation of families and the violation of basic human dignity," they wrote.
Besides passage of a bill this year, they ask that the bill "respects the God-given dignity of every person, protects family unity, respects the rule of law, guarantees the integrity of our national borders, ensures fairness for taxpayers, and makes it possible for undocumented immigrants who meet the requirements to become citizens if they desire."
Earlier this year, House Republican leaders announced that they would pursue immigration reform based upon a set of principles they agreed to. Later, though, Speaker of the House John Boehner announced that passage of a bill would be unlikely this year because his caucus did not trust President Barack Obama to faithfully implement the law.

How many of these folks pushing “Immigration Reform” would be so magnanimous about “undocumented houseguests” who set-up camp in a spare room in the rectory/parsonage?
The interminable drive to force immigration reform (actually Amnesty though none will say it aloud) via the cloaks of religious generosity is wholly deceitful, political and anti-religion as anything could get.
They seek to perpetuate the religion of the privileged and the corrupt. There is nothing ‘generous’ or pious about surrendering sovereignty that in the face of laws designed to protect the innocent (we sovereign citizens) from unclean invaders.
The greatest reform that the territory once known as “the United States of America” could make to such immigration policy as exists would be to enforce the laws already on the books.
But instead, we get ever greater rollback of any kind of enforcement, particularly of the southern border. Anyone who can get into Mexico has an almost free pass over the boundary going north, at least until they come to the Canadian border.
That might be a great thing for some anti-illegal immigration protesters to do. Park themselves in the spare room and demand to be allowed to stay as “undocumented houseguests.”
I get tired of the social activists in the churches all acting like they are doing ‘God’s’ work. The roman church has a long history in the US of pushing the envelope of marxism to further their own world view.
Frankly I am sick and tired of all the folks who think that the US should just open its borders and act like an automatic ATM. Have them all go live in the poverty stricken third world ( with out the trappings of their religion which lets them live very nicely thank you) and leave the rest of the world alone
We have immigration laws. They work when used as designed. I personally have 3 friends that came here from other Country’s LEGALLY and within the system, followed the LAW and are now US Citizens.
Just enforce the laws we have remove those that violate them.

We do have immigration laws in force. According to my understanding of the bible we have a responsibilty to follow the laws of the civil society. I am not aware of any place in the bible where it says we are to break the laws of civil society. Am I wrong? Bottom line is that illegal immigrants have broken the law. This act should not be rewarded.
I notice they ask for “and respect for the rule of law” That is what is missing now and will continue since you want to reward breaking many laws.
Our borders are a sieve. I was not talking about what is ‘current’ I was talking about the leftie do gooders who call themselves Christians and try and tell us that Hod would want (fill in the blank. At least be on topic
