The staples of cutting-edge academic “research”-smirking irony, cultural relativism, celebration of putative victims, facile attacks on science-are all thriving in America’s premier museum and research complex, its showcase to itself and to the world. The changes at the Smithsonian are not unique to that institution. Museums across the country have rushed headlong into what may be called the “new museologv;’ based on a mindless parroting of academic fads. But the Smithsonian’s embrace of postmodern theory and identity politics is of greatest import, because of the Institution’s contribution to America’s public identity.And of course, the Smithsonian was also eager to jump on the Norman Rockwell was gay bandwagon — in October, their Website ran a massive 6000-word excerpt of Solomon’s biography, which reveals far more about the mindset of its author and publishers than it does any new details of Rockwell’s life."
Generating enough blogsphere traffic and voila (1) the author(s) will have notoriety, and (2) fabricated tale become ‘everybody knows that, known fact’.
If you ever find yourself in the Berkshires with time on your hands, you absolutely *must* visit the Rockwell Museum, especially his studio, unchanged since his death.
IF so, he had the decency to stay ‘closeted’.
If the Gay community can claim American icons like Rockwell to their camp they believe it gives legitimacy to their deviant behavior.

My gosh! Just because of him painting boys, he is now gay. Since 90% of his paintings are of WHITE people, I wonder when he be called a racist?
This is considered one of his finest. Note the contrapposto pose and the moonlighting on the scout leader's face - something only a well-trained artist could pull off successfully:
Solomon drops hints about some kind of attraction to men or boys but admits that she doesn't believe that Rockwell actually had sex with any of them.
Norman Rockwell may or may not have been aware of some physical attraction, but nothing that Solomon relates would have been scandalous or surprising in an artist of Rockwell's day.
I'm pretty sure though, that the "pedophilia" that she finds in pictures like that of the cop and the runaway is in her own head, a product more of the suspicions of our own age than of anything in Rockwell.
In the summer of 1959, I had the pleasure of living directly across the street from Norman Rockwell in Lee, MA (close to his favorite Stockbridge). He was living with a landlady at the time. On numerous occasions during that summer, he asked me to accompany him to the Berkshire Museum in nearby Pittsfield, MA. I was a student at the time at the Tanglewood/Berkshire Music Center. I got to know him quite well, certainly well enough to know that he was not homosexual. Being a musician, I knew and had known some males of that persuasion and could easily distinguish them from normal males. He was a genuine man who was adored by many for his love of America and his portrayal of American life in art.
What total nonsense.
