In his press conference on December 20th, President Obama urged the House of Representatives to support the Senate’s immigration bill, which passed 68-32 in late June. Among the concerns cited by Americans who oppose reform are that immigrants will take their jobs, drive down wages, increase criminal activity, burden the welfare system, and reshape the cultural dynamic of the country. These concerns are mostly ill-founded. The legitimate concerns have real solutions, and a more open immigration policy will be a net benefit for all Americans...

- A 2013 study by the American Action Forum states that "immigration reform can raise population growth, labor force growth, and thus growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).”
- In 2013 the Bipartisan Policy Center came to similar conclusions. It makes the prediction that current provisions, as included in the Senate Bill, would raise GDP 4.8 percent over twenty years.
- According to the Immigration Policy Center, immigrant males between the ages of 18 and 39 (which constitute the greatest portion of the prison population) are five times less likely to be incarcerated than are natives.
- A 2011 survey by the Pew Research Center revealed that 92 percent of second generation and 96 percent of third generation Hispanics speak English proficiently.
- A 2010 Gallup poll revealed that Hispanics attend church services more often than non-Hispanic whites.
- Since an influx of immigrants means an expansion of the labor supply, many assert that the result will be less jobs and lower wages. However, as asserted by Jason Riley, a member of the Wall Street Journal editorial board, “The number of jobs in the United States is not static. It’s fluid, which is how we want it to be.”

I mostly use the Nook for games, but I do have about 50 books on it, in various stages of being read.
The Kindle is the “utility” ebook...I have about 300 books on it, and usually download one or two freebies a day, if I can. I just finished an ebook that took place in the 1920’s and 30’s in Shanghai, China, and it was really quite good. “Gangs of Shanghai,” or some such. Now I’m reading one set in the beginnings of WWII. But I have mysteries, fantasies, sci-fi, biographies, history...even, YES: SCRIPTURES on both pads!!!
I also have a game of 21 on the Kindle. The Kindle was a gift when it was replaced by a spendier model, but it’s all good! It has no backlight and no color, which the Nook does, so when I want to relax at night, I shut off the lamp and play Solitaire until my eyelids are ready to slam shut. Not much chance of that happening tomorrow! LOL!

And I got a New Book Catalog from Dover today...just what I needed...
I began to research some of the herbal/homeopathic remedy books on anemia, and have been putting bits and pieces together of the information I’ve gleaned since the doctor’s phone call last night. It looks like I will be having three units of blood. The hemoglobin didn’t change this morning, but the count is so low that three units is probably a safe amount.
There wasn’t an awful lot of info in the books about foods rich in iron, but according to what I have found so far, raisins are at the top of the list; when I stop at Walmart for my snacks and water for tomorrow, I will add raisins to the list. It’s a good thing I was blessed with a little extra dinero this month. Between the gas to get there and back and the snacks, it will be like a day at the spa...only not quite as fun!
Monday, I have the chemical stress test for my heart, so it’s a good thing I’m having the transfusion tomorrow. At least I won’t be so worn out when they are done with me on Monday. And it will be in the same place I’m going to tomorrow...*sigh*

I have a friend that lives in the area I have to be in, and if I can arrange it, I will spend the night there. It is more appealing than making that drive three times in as many days, especially since I am no longer (for many years!) gainfully employed. At least a job would replace the petrol... ;o]
The sheer boredom of lying around all afternoon and into the evening is probably going to wear me out...
