In his press conference on December 20th, President Obama urged the House of Representatives to support the Senates immigration bill, which passed 68-32 in late June. Among the concerns cited by Americans who oppose reform are that immigrants will take their jobs, drive down wages, increase criminal activity, burden the welfare system, and reshape the cultural dynamic of the country. These concerns are mostly ill-founded. The legitimate concerns have real solutions, and a more open immigration policy will be a net benefit for all Americans...
Highlights from Article:
- A 2013 study by the American Action Forum states that "immigration reform can raise population growth, labor force growth, and thus growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
- In 2013 the Bipartisan Policy Center came to similar conclusions. It makes the prediction that current provisions, as included in the Senate Bill, would raise GDP 4.8 percent over twenty years.
- According to the Immigration Policy Center, immigrant males between the ages of 18 and 39 (which constitute the greatest portion of the prison population) are five times less likely to be incarcerated than are natives.
- A 2011 survey by the Pew Research Center revealed that 92 percent of second generation and 96 percent of third generation Hispanics speak English proficiently.
- A 2010 Gallup poll revealed that Hispanics attend church services more often than non-Hispanic whites.
- Since an influx of immigrants means an expansion of the labor supply, many assert that the result will be less jobs and lower wages. However, as asserted by Jason Riley, a member of the Wall Street Journal editorial board, The number of jobs in the United States is not static. Its fluid, which is how we want it to be.

I’m convinced that the Bee Gees were an attempt by some eldritch entity to affront sanity and destroy reality.
The Captain and Tennille, too.
*shudder*
Obvious eldritch invasion is obvious!
That's usually only a problem if it happens to get underfoot, as it did for me on a little trip I took this morning to the snowy wilds of Pennsylvania.
I'm declaring myself snowed in. Nobody bother me unless you're bringing booze.
Understood.
I bring absinthe laced coffee.
It’s not as far as it would be otherwise, but you would have to deal with the weather.
Try to show up by morning, but not too early.
Ah...
Just the thing to go with peanut butter and duck sauce sandwiches for breakfast...
Back from Damascus. 74 degrees there yesterday.
No snow. No ice. no fog. No cold. No sign of winter.
January in Oregon and the entire coastal region is under a “red flag” fire warning; fire hazard is considered “extreme.”
Got to dine at my FAVORITE restaurant in the universe Saturday:

If you’ve ever any reason to be in that region, you simply MUST block out time to dine at Novak’s.
#1 son did about 1,000 miles of the highway driving; all quite well-executed. Cheering that bit of success.
Invested about $30 for a 100W inverter so baby girl could watch “Finding Nemo” in the car on the road. Truck stops have just about got to be the world’s best kept secret source of every odd-but-useful object.
Back in the office tomor, er, uh....[ahem] later today.
If anyone really wants to know what time it is...

Naturally.
And cucumber sandwiches with the absinthe coffee.
It’ll be huge!
Well...
It's in Albany. It's just that the Albany in question is a tad further from me than the Albany that is an hour and a half away...
There wouldn't happen to be any AndyCuomos in your Albany would there?
“Lassie, the new adventures: this time Timmy eats it!”
Sounds exciting!
Happy Monday. Unnngh.
Either it’s Monday all over the cosmos, or the Undead are scared of vampire kittehs.
It’s only Monday all over the world for an hour every week.
Even then, I sleep through it.
For some reason, your cat picture never seems to finish loading.
It’s snowing like a banshee here.
I’m sorry. I had to go to bed to warm up. It’s 36 out this morning, but we will see some low 70’s later in the week. They just won’t last long, is all...they will be followed by 60s again, and rain.
We need the rain!
If I brought booze, I’d send the St. Bernard to your door. He could make a path in the snow for me to follow!
Wow! What’s your favorite dish at Novak’s?
