The totality of his comment indicates he’s still an idiot. I can’t “keep” my weapons if they are capable of killing people, they should be in an armory. It’s easy to extrapolate how he would feel about my carrying one on my person to thwart a mugger.
Which is something my son suffers from (actually BiPolar/schizoaffective) which is why I am my state's coordinator for this program: Family-to-Family I teach this course 2-3 times each year to hundreds of families dealing with an ill relative.
Because of how mental illness is treated in pop culture, the general public has no idea what families who deal with mental illness go though. No idea at all. It is one of the most devastating things a family can face because of the nearly total lack of compassion and understanding by friends and community. I wouldn't wish mental illness (brain disorders) on anyone.
This summer the wife of a high school friend was brutally murdered by the son they had tried to have involuntarily hospitalized just days before. It’s just an all around tragic story.
The Virginia state congressman who was hospitalized the other day sounds like a similar situation.
Sorry, it is not conservative to want to disarm people and force them to store their guns in an NRA armory. Keep and Bear arms means just that. If they are in an NRA armory, then you are not “keeping” your guns, you are just checking them out when desired. You have no access to them when needed.
This time, he's moved several steps towards me rather me making personal ideological concessions for his views.
Don't fault him here. It's a start.
"This means something....This is important."

“short list of allowed guns”, huh?
I became a Firearms Instructor just so I could “give something back”. By teaching ladies, kids, elderly folk, etc. And one of the FIRST things I teach them is “This is your RIGHT to own and carry this - or any other firearm you choose to.”
You want to keep your rights, you have to be willing to do something to defend them, is the way I see it.
No one - not the NRA, not Dreyfuss, not the Fed - has the right to tell you what you can and can’t own. If it came to that, I’d ignore them just as quickly and with the same contempt I ignore the gun-grabbers.
If we’re to call ourselves Free Men, we need to act and behave as such.
