A Concord native and Bishop Brady High School graduate was killed last week in the Philippines.

Matthew Caldwell was a member of the Philippine Coast Guard Auxillary and rose to national prominence last August, when he was part of the team that retrieved the remains of a government official from a plane crash over open water.

Friends who posted tributes to Caldwell online identified him as a 1972 graduate of Bishop Brady High School.

His sister Mary Caldwell said in an email that she and her brother’s children were in Manila until next weekend.

According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Caldwell, 59, was shot late Thursday night at the gates of the Hamilton Heights Subdivision in Las Piñas City after allegedly getting into an argument with the village security guard over association dues.

Americans are killed by the thousands every month in democrat-controlled areas here in America, but it isn’t news.

I wonder if this was a security guard at a gated community? I suspect if you pay them, they will take care of you. Las Pinas is Metro Manila. Another reason to stay away from Manila, right Alex?

Yes, I have never even landed in Manila, and have not set foot on Luzon. Always best to book a flight that lands in Cebu. Security guards everywhere in the Philippines, however, are always armed with these things that look like riot guns.
I do not notice any in my town, but always in cities.

Better pay your guard fees and dues. Those people place their life between you and the bad people. I know. I had a staff of 35 and they were good.

What a shame. Last time I was there was in 1977 and it wasn’t like that at all. Of course, Mindanao, just south of where I worked, was the home of all the communist gorillas. But Manila at the time was very peaceful and safe.

The first time I went to the Philippines, to Batangas province, they had armed guards at the fast food restaurants. The bank guards were armed with AR-15 rifles. Almost every bank I went to, they bent over backwards to help me out. My honey started a small restaurant business, and is doing pretty well. It is a lot of work, but it keeps her busy. I am looking at possibly November, to return to the Philippines, my MacArthur act. I will e mail you pics of the house I will be in.

Well, I do not care for any big city like Cebu or Manila, and I do not hear anything good about Manila .
For banking and extra shopping, we go to Dumaguete, Negros.
Even with the 30 min. boat trip from the southern tip of Cebu, it is faster then going to Cebu city.
For me, going to Cebu is a pain in the ass. Safety is not a concern with me.
Yes, the western end of Mindanao is a mess from the Muzie terrorist. Fortunately, there is no Muzie problem where I live. I can not say that I have even seen one here.

All the ones I saw in Cebu and Cagayan de Oro had shotguns.
