A full-sized pickup truck with a cap on it is THE best vehicle for a long road trip. Plenty of space for storing gear or taking a quick nap, and if you’re driving a Ford F-150 it’s a very comfortable ride!
It was an old 1963 school bus that my Dad converted into a RV/camper.We traveled all up and down the east coast. Me and my 5 brothers and sisters, with Dad and Mom....The best years of my life,
We finally settled in Florida.
Honda ST-1300. Great bike for cross country touring.
I took my wife sightseeing and camping one summer. We always brought plenty of creature comforts with us. At one campsite in Colorado a fellow came over and asked, “how in the heck do you pack all of that stuff on that bike?” lol
Yellowstone Park and the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody Wyoming were some of the highlights of that trip.
Oh well, what the heck, I’ll play.
A Dodge 2500 4x4 diesel with camper shell and auxiliary fuel tank plus off road gear and a one man inflatable pontoon raft. Comfortable, all but unstoppable if some trail beacons but a little big, decent fuel economy, can kit it out for a couple of weeks of independence. Safe on the highway since the law of lug nuts wins. You can fish a lake or a river or run a little white water with the raft.
The diesel is a little loud for some but it sings the song of an open road and liberty for now. I’ve gotta make another long trip while I still can.
A white Dodge Challenger doing the VANISHING POINT remake.
Electra-Glide Ultra
Returned from a 3,000 mile round trip across 8 states in a trusty 2001 Monte Carlo SS. Not a hitch, stall, flat, alert and averaged 31mpg. I do love the old Chevys.
Once upon a time, 8 adults and a baby loaded in a split-window camper that had a 3 person bench in the front, from Birmingham through London in the middle of the night to Dover-Calais, one overnight along the Rhine, through the alps, and into Italy, Citta di Castello.
How many are old enough to remember Dinah Shore singing:
See the USA in your Chevrolet
America is asking you to call
Drive your Chevrolet through the USA
America’s the greatest land of all
A very common TV commercial and unabashedly pro America.
When young camp. In 1971 took a cool trip with a 1967 VW camper.
When older, touring car and hotels. In 2006 took same trip with a 2004 Audi allroad, AWD, twin-turbo V6, adjustable height, navigation, satellite radio.
The OC through Vegas, St. George, Brian Head pass, Zion park, Bryce park, Northern AZ strip, North Rim GC, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Jerome, Prescott and back to OC.
GOLDWING
On my weekends, I took the opportunity to visit France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, and Austria.
That was a lot of driving.
My rental car was a Ford Kuga. The U.S. equivalent is the Ford Escape (except the Kuga had a diesel engine and a manual transmission).
I had a surprisingly good time driving it.
Probably didn't hurt that I got to drive 200+ kph on the Autobahn most of the time.
This was my baby before it was sold, SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!!

I was Blessed to be able to put my life into my '05 'ManCave' last Dec ... driving down to the Lower 48 where I now wander about ... pestering my friends.
Ultimately I'll tire of the road and find myself a cabin and a barn ... probably somewhere around 'Small-Town TX.
Will share a few pics once I get that all figured out again.
