Blocking a government funding bill over ObamaCare is "the dumbest idea I've ever heard," Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) said Thursday.
Burr argued stopping ObamaCare's funding is not going to be achievable as long as President Obama is in the White House, and that Republicans risked taking the blame if they forced the goverment to shut down over the issue.
"I think it's the dumbest idea I've ever heard," Burr told journalist Todd Zwilich Thursday. "Listen, as long as Barack Obama is president the Affordable Care Act is gonna be law.
"I think some of these guys need to understand that you shut down the federal government, you better have a specific reason to do it that's achievable," Burr continued. "Defunding the Affordable Care Act is not achievable through shutting down the federal government."
Support is building within the House and Senate GOP for using a continuing resolution to fund the government to take a stand on ObamaCare.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has been among the loudest voices arguing Republicans should not fund ObamaCare through a government-funding measure.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) is spearheading the effort and has rallied a number of Tea Party Republicans and members of Senate Republican leadership around the proposal.
House Republicans are also putting pressure on their leaders over the issue.
On Wednesday, Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) also expressed opposition to the proposal.
"I think holding the debt limit hostage to any specific thing is probably not the best negotiating place," Blunt said.
Shut it down, and see if anyone notices
Shut it down, and see if anyone notices
I thought we got our butts kicked the last time the government shut down. I believe people noticed.
Senator Burr is the dumbest Republocrat I have ever heard.
So protecting the Constitution is the dumbest idea he has ever heard?
Time to educate Him.
Dear Lord, give us strength.
Tatt
Shut it down, board it up, lock all the doors, and evacuate! We don’t need you “doing” anything for us.
Come back in a few years, and we’ll talk.
Does Burr think Obama makes law? Does he not understand the roles of the branches? Of course, one could argue that none of them do because they haven’t lifted a finger to exercise the powers granted them to stop Obama......either they don’t know or they’re all ‘in it’ together. Either way, it screams ‘time for a reset’.
Evidently he hasn’t bothered to look at any of the national polls. Public sentiment is against Obamacare.
Another useless Republican senator.
Isn’t he the one that ‘came out of the closet’ to vote for ending don’t ask don’t tell?
Wonder what the NSA has on him...
If the ‘tax-requirement’ was removed....the whole thing would fall apart. Note, it doesn’t require 60 senators to dump the tax-requirement....only 51. I think the Chief Justice did everyone a favor when he noted that the $1,000 was a tax....unlike the description that the President used.
Good post. It’s time for a very big reset.
Senator DICKLESS Burr (R-NC) - "the dumbest idea I've ever heard."
Note, it doesnt require 60 senators to dump the tax-requirement....only 51.
Maybe they can try for that. We need 6 Democrats to side with us.
He gets just enough right to be re-elected, then reverts to his establishment self the rest of the time.
With the GOPE they always promise, we will defend to the death on the next issue, this one is not worth fighting for. GOPE = cheese eating surrender monkeys. It is time for the GOP as a party to go the way of the whigs, there is little difference between them and the communist party currently in power, just the price.
Is it also true when you are “defunding” a bill that it doesn’t require the President’s signature...
No senator, passing legislation without reading it (we have to pass it to know what’s in it) is the dumbest thing I ever heard.
The GOP has squandered the main power of Congress — the power of the purse.
A host of appropriation bills could be passed funding everything but Obamacare. If the President vetoes them, GOP leaders should be articulate enough to show who is responsible.
you said”I thought we got our butts kicked the last time the government shut down. I believe people noticed”
We lost 6 seats in the house and gained 2 in the Senate in 1996, This was not a butt kicking in my world.

And lost the Presidency....lol. Sheesh that was very bad and it had all to do with the shutdown.
