And for proof, you have to check out this video of a muddy horserace in New York City last month. Just watch what happens.

2013 Brooklyn Handicap - Calidoscopio + Post Race
This will put a big smile on your face : - )
Great post...two words. Silky Sullivan
WOW!
What a great picture! My daughter says that Saratoga opened yesterday. They had tickets to attend.
The biggest thing here is that he was 10, although that can happen, just few horses race past 6. The margin is doable in a 1-1/2mi race. Looks more impressive since the opponents were not strung out all the way back.
A real wow was the 2009 UN Handicap by winner Presious Passion. Opposite, almost, running all out on front so early and holding on to win. Early part of the race was like Secretariat’s Belmont and what it must’ve been like to see Man O’War in many of his.
BTW, this was my birthday! ;-)
Almost. Saratoga opened on Friday.
Yes, great post.
Loved Silky. I believe it was track announcer Harry Henson who, at the proper moment, would intone, “And here comes Silky!”
Well, her plans were on Sunday and she was excited about going. I guess she probably said “Saratoga opens this weekend” and I just heard “Sunday”. Although they live nearby, she doesn’t get to go often. She has an autistic child (age 18) who requires constant supervision.
Something comparable might be CBS Television announcer Chic Anderson describing Secretariat’s pace in the 1973 Belmont Stakes, “Secretariat is widening now! He is moving like a tremendous machine!”
Actually, opening day was on Friday, July 19, one of the hottest days so far this year. There were veterinarians posted along the track. I have only been to Saratoga once but it was lots of fun. Such a beautifully preserved horse track.

One contented horse!
Hope your daughter had a good time. The surrounding community depends on the race season to draw in enough revenue to keep them going the rest of the year. Great food! Fantastic restaurants and plenty of B&Bs. Worth the trip, from anywhere.
See post #9. My grandson works up there loading beer trucks over night for a local brewery, and my son in law belongs to a golf club nearby. But, my daughter doesn’t get there often, and she always enjoys the outing. They like to stand along the fence to watch the races. She likes to watch the people as much as the horses. LOL.
Oh, yes. My grandson’s Senior Prom was up at Saratoga in one of the posh hotels. He and his friends hired a limo for the trip.
She's got the right idea. People can oftentimes be more entertaining than the races. Saratoga is a beautiful locale ... but it can be quite pricey. I hope they can maintain its integrity for many more decades.
Yes. I’ve watched that video many times. Thrilling every time. Anderson was right.
That’s really nice, glad she could go. I finally went in 2006 on Whitney day, got to see the great Invasor win that. Really great day. I have checked off another thing on the to-do list so I don’t feel great need to go anymore, but I sure would like to.
Thanks a lot. Nice to know you also have appreciation for the horses here. ;-)
