Teen jailed for sarcastic remark beaten up in jail, now on suicide watch

Grisly new details emerged in the story of the ongoing imprisonment of Justin Carter, who racked up months in jail for making sarcastic, violent threats after playing an online video game.

Carter has been beaten up multiple times while in jail in Comal County, Texas, according to NPR. He is now on suicide watch.

“This was his first incarceration, his first charge, and without getting into the really nasty details, he has had concussions, he has had black eyes,” said Jack Carter, Justin’s father, in a statement.

Carter is one of two teenagers imprisoned for months for the crime of making off-color, threatening comments over the internet in response to a video game. Josh Pillault has been imprisoned for even longer–since last October. He recently pled guilty to the charges against him out of fear that fighting them would result in a lengthier sentence.

The jail he is in is a small county jail in New Braunfels, Tx. The reason why he keeps getting beat up is he probably wont shut his mouth. He probably whines and when told to shut up he mouths off. Response.... a beating by a fellow jailmate. Ive been a guest at the same facility when I was a dumb youth. No one will mess with you if you abide by the rules and keep your mouth and business to yourself.
Let it be known that this a county municipal facility, not a state privatized one.

"The feds are behind this. It ain't rocket science. Half a million bail for a 19 YO kid and a SPEECH crime?"

The kid has been beaten, and probably worse, and is on suicide watch, because of being successfully prosecuted for a Thought/Speech supposed crime?.
Isn't it unconstitutional to arrest, much less prosecute, someone for their thoughts?
And it happened in Texas?
Unbelievable.

Why isn't anybody DOING SOMETHING about this?
( Sounds to me like the judge, and anybody else involved, should be in jail, not the kid.)

From what is written here, it seems like the most that should have happened is a visit from the authorities, to check it out. But, then again, maybe not even that. He said "just kidding" after what he wrote.

(As I'm posting here, there was a report on the local news, that a woman was arrested for stealing beer, and cussing out the cop who arrested her-she was given probation.)

Maybe they can ask the governor to pardon this kid?
Then they need to investigate how the hell this happened.

Unless somebody can show that there is more to this than meets the eye, there probably isn’t. There are more than a few cases out there of people being punished by the judicial system well out of proportion of their accused crime.

He hasn’t even had a chance to plea his case and he’s received far more punishment than all but the most serious offenders.

So a young adult spend months in jail getting raped because he made a stupid comment, but Islamist are allowed to plant pressure cooker bombs in the middle of a marathon after the Russians warned the Federal government.

Does anyone still think the war on terror is actually a war on terrorists ?

Could be. As is often the case, there is much we will never know about the details and motivations of those in the legal system.

It’s a safe bet that someone deliberately decided to destroy this person’s life. This isn’t just a bureaucracy run amok, IMO.

World of Warcraft.

It’s part of the fantasy genre.

>>>>threatening to kill Kindergarteners is not going to earn him much sympathy easpecially now, beyond from a few here I guess. He has no constitutional right to do this.

Maybe the other morons will learn from this case NOT TO DO that, and this will not happen again.

I hear that criminals in jail are tough on child molesters too. They dont like that child abuse stuff.<<<<

I can’t believe an American is saying it. It was probably a fantasy video game and a guy has obviously played a fool after. Why won’t ban all video games, Hollywood action movies and a news about crimes on TV? All of the above proved to contribute into a daily violence. Or at least ban every violent scene and jail actors saying threats to other characters along with producers, directors and writers?

But first we have to institute a Speech Control Agency to effectively determine which speech is more safe than another. It is a good thing to instruct kids in a public schools to report if their parents are angry or say “violent” things at home. Right?

This quote is getting a workout today. “And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.” ― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn _________________________________ Not only the security operatives but all the liberal fascists.

Naw, he said he was trying to be funny, and he did it (said he will kill some Kindergarteners) on his facebook pages.

But now a days after Sandy Hook killings people just dont think that's funny, not even in Texas.

“It is the worst kept secret in the country that prison management uses rape as a tool. It is a national scandal.”

I see Freepers cheering it on on a regular basis. It makes me sick.

I don’t think it is funny, either. It is still not a reason to keep an idiot in prison. There were numerous other ways to teach him a lesson.

Possibly, but one thing to remember is that this town there are more police per capita then any neighboring municipality. At any given point of the day, you can see anywhere between 3-10 police on patrol per half mile of road. I am not exaggerating. New Braunfels is what many would think is a mini gestapo town.
